Replacing CV boots without removing axles (a how-to guide)
Ok, I finally did it! I got my Astoria Flexx Boot gun in last Friday and backed the 300DT into the garage.
But, instead of draining/dropping the differential, I remembered reading somewhere (not on this site) that inner boots could be replaced without removal of the axle. I searched all over and although I did find references to the idea, I didn't find any helpful information. Before I continue, I know there are some people wondering why I wouldn't want to do the diff. Well, it's quite simple... money and time. Right now, I have very little time and even less money. In the fall, I should have more of both and then I'll do all the things that I should do right now. I haven't had the car on the road in months because of the cracked boot, but I have to get it going and this was the shortest distance between the two points. So, anyway... Right now, it's just the boots and the car's back on the road. (By the way, I'm still debating whether to sell the Flexx gun or rent it. I'm open to suggestions if anyone wants to PM me.)

The gun is not needed with the Astoria FB3001 boot.
BTW, the axles have to come out folks. |

No, the axles do NOT have to come out. I replaced all 4 boots without removing the axles and I did take pics at every step. It's just that I do have a life outside my garage and I honestly haven't had time to do the write up.

He would not have needed the Astoria Flexx Boot gun for split boots.
He also did not say if the Axles he replaced the Boots on were Homokinetic or Annular axles. I think that to change the boots on a Homokinetic type Axles you have to have 1 end of the Axle free to slide the Boots over. This means that the Axle needs to come out of the rear Trailing Arm/Wheel Bearing Hub area (he said he did not want to mess with the differential). I do not know about with the Annular Axles. One end of the Annular Axles has bolts going through it and it may be possible to unbolt it. But, I have read no write up at all concerning replacing boots on Annular Axles.

The idea of changing the Boots on the Axle while it is on the vehicle does not appeal to me either.

Too Many Other Opportunities...
To get "Mechanic's Cramps" pretzeled 'neath these chassis, when you have no
choice in the matter. The axles, heterosexual or not, are "coming out" of the Differential and Wheel Hubs for fresh rubber.
