Or you have some amazingly long arms. Doesn't sound like you could clean the cans effectively either, so why tackle this job if not done correctly?

I'm sorry, but this thread is a joke.

The original poster has already spent more time saying "yes, it can be done," than it would have taken to write a brief tutorial, including pictures, which he says he has.

Until I see someone put new boots on an axle without getting under the car or removing the actual axle, I won't believe a guy who simply says "I've done it." Not that I would mind if that were the case, I think we'd all like half-shafts to be easier. But the only way I can see not getting under the car to properly replace boots is by removing the back seat and cutting out the floor.

It can be done without removing it from the diff if flexx boots and a flexx gun are utilized. I don't question that it can be done.
But, there comes a point of diminishing returns which that job would be. You can't possibly clean out the cans good enough, and the flexx gun is huge and trying to do all that under the car isn't too smart.
There isn't a single thing difficult or time consuming with removing the half shaft from the diff. As stated earlier, you can clean out the old cans easier, install the boots easier, install the band clamps easier and reassemble with new diff fluid.
Some jobs that might cut out a step [not removing from diff] actually end up being more of a pain in the arse than not. The real saver in this whole exercise is using the gun and the flexx boots. That is the effort saver.......
It's like rebuilding an engine without removing it from the car. It might be possible, but the bang to hype ratio is out of whack.......

Me:Homokinetic or Annular?

PerkHouse: "Don't know the difference. '82 W123"

If both ends of each Axle look the same it is a Homokinetic type Axle (to me it looks like a can on each end of the Axle).
The Annular type Axle has a "can" on one end and a different type of joint on the other end of the Axle with Bolts going through the housing on it. The Bolt heads can be seen.

The year of the car may or may not help as during certain years and with Cars made at different Plants the same Model and year might have have a set of either on them.

If replaced as a pair the 2 types of axles are interchangeable on some of the years and Models.
For my 84 w123 I can use either type on my car.

I can't imagine the utility of leaving the axles in. You should be replacing the dif seals, Changing dif oil, cleaning and repacking the cv joints etc...not impossible to do under the car but messy, difficult .... I ve swapped out 4 axles so far and it's a 4-6 hour job max.

I cant imagine spending $320 on a tool and scrimping $5 on gear oil.

123's all can use either axle. (Homo or straight)
