722.1xx help in W116 needed

Hi, the shop brought it two of these from the dealer, wondering which one to use?

One has a longer neck than the other, so the choices are the 3/4" or the 1" filter.

Thanks,
Darcy

Excellent. The shop brought in both, didn;t know which one fit, and gave me them both but charged for one with the promise I bring it back.

Nice guys, seeing as I was someone right off the street, not a regular customer.

722.1xx help needed

I have a 1980 300SD w116 with a slipping transmission. It will go into each gear, very slowly, and needs to be revved high to actually move.

So far, I have done only a filter and fluid change, although I haven't drained the torque converter yet (just discovered that). No change in her condition.

Is my baby hooped for sure, or is there something next to try?

Thanks,
Dunl

Make sure the rod going to the transmission from the valvecover is attached and moves with the accelerator linkage.

Don't trash anything yet. There are lots of things that can cause bad shifting siuations. Try check the bushings on the shifter. Make sure they are there, and are in good condition. Sometimes delayed initial shifting into gear is caused by a bad or missing bushing. When are the gears slipping? I would first suspect a vacuum leak. There are several other things that could need replacing, or adjusting. The transmission modulator controls shift quality, and can be adjusted, but should only be done when the vac system is all sealed up. There is also the B2 pistion which is involved in the 1-2 shift that can be replaced, and the K1 spring which in involved in the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts that can be replaced. I wouldn't replace either the B2 or K1 untill you know for sure that your vac system is good to go.

At what RPM does the car begin to move? How much gunk was at the bottom of the pan? How was the fluid level after changing it? When you put it in gear while the engine is idling, to you feel the initial pull or "clunk"?

There are a number of things to check.

I can't even feel it slip into gear..it just starts to slowly move at very low m/hr and will not speed up without slipping.

Ok, so low Miles per Hour, what about engine speed, Revolutions per Minute?

If you can't feel it go from Part to Reverse or Drive, it can be a number of things like low fluid level, low tranny oil pressure, clogged filter, worn out or slipping clutch packs, worn seals, faulty oil pump, faulty torque converter, worn shift selector bushings.

Does the car creep in reverse or drive, brakes off and engine idling?

I,m having transmission issues as well on my 1987 300D. This morning leaving home and climbing a hill I heard a clunk and the car would not pull so I coasted to a safe place to park. The car will not engage in Reverse nor any forward gear. When trying to place it in Park I hear a grinding noise and it appears the car is really not engage into Park so I chalked it with blocks to keep it from rolling. I hearing it could be flex discs... Any suggestions are helpful.
