Honestly, I don't even care if this one works right now. I'm just glad I was able to handle pulling it out.
Pulling the engine from the parts car is my next big job after the tranny swap, I think. ![]()

That is a good job!
And I am glad you got it out. It all adds up to experience. Pulling a transmission is heavy, greasy, nasty and kind of unrewarding. Yes you got it out, but it is better back in. Putting it in has a lot of the same moves, but it has a degree of difficulty a little higher then removing it. Really not much to line up in pulling it out - just keep it on the jack and out and down. So if you enjoyed pulling it, you will probably will be happy to re-install one somewhere down the road. If you take your time, and do it right, it can be done.

That's a good one Don, it definitely has to be put back in still. Dunl, the transmission is the second biggest mechanical thing in the car and there are many, many people who won't touch them because of the size of the job or they are just scared of transmissions. I have worked as a mechanic for independents and dealerships for 9 years plus I have worked at Honda's R&D center for the last 5. I can't even count the number transmissions I have had out. I don't think of myself as an expert on anything but am I a transmission expert by default? I don't know. There isn't anything I haven't done on a car. Period. But, I don't like bodywork and I stay away from it as much as possible. Why, I don't know. I have relatively little experience in bodywork too so I definitely consiter myself a novice there. So don't judge your ability based on anything else other than what you are comfortable in doing. To 99% of people out there, you are a god now as far as transmissions go. Maybe you perfer doing bodywork and do it all the time and are probably good at it. You would take a good look at me trying it and say dude, its easy. I would just struggle. Good job on getting the transmission out, its especially not easy at home. Eric.

I love that quote.
![]() Thanks for the encouragement guys. I talked before with Carrameow about whether it was advisable or not, and he said to go for it. So I figured I'd start small with the trannys. Like he said: Quote:
VegiBenz, you said it was the second biggest thing to do - I'm assuming pulling the engine is the first?

I think the hardest thing is rebuilding the transmission.. I'm afraid of the insides...
pulling the engine is probably #1 |

I've pulled 4 transmissions in my life. Generally they aren't that hard IMO. Just big and bulky, I would guss rebuilding to be much harder (dont know and dont want to know). I do know the top bolts with a 617.952 required me to hump the engine. HUGE PITA. Probably alot easier to pull eng + tran and do the bolts after

I hear ya about the top bolts. That's where a 3in extension on your socket becomes your best friend.
Unfortunately, the biggest pain in the head for me was the top bolt on the crossmember on the passenger side....it never did come out, so the tranny was pulled with that still in place hanging down on one side. Spent 1.5 hours on that bolt. Mental note - remove the top bolts first on the crossmembers, and then the bottom bolts. ![]() I did find that the torque converter bolts were the easiest...had all six out in about 5 minutes. I was used to turning the engine with the 27mm socket from previously draining the torque converter. Yeah, rebuilding....think I will pass on that one. Too much effort for the result gained when you can swap, but I bet it's gratifying to have completed that task. How much easier is the engine going to be with the tranny out?

IIRC the FSM recommends removing both at the same time.

Are you going to do both?
I am going to do both on Goldie next week. Yes, yes. She is waiting for that transplant. New engine and transmission. Of course old Blue is going to have to die, and I am really sad about that because the little car runs and drives so nice. But it has rust all over, rust has increased a lot since I bought it almost 3 years ago. Never again will I get a Benz out of New York! But I am transplanting the engine and transmission and the interior to Goldie and that should give me a great car, perfect body, no rust and now a better engine and transmission.
But, I look at it this way. If you are going to pull engine and transmission, pull them together. Bajaman and I pulled his two years ago and they come out very nice together and separate pretty easy on a trailer or on the garage floor.

Yes, I am pulling both, as the parts car needs to leave, and I refuse to leave the engine in it when it does leave. (rustbucket)
I would have pulled them at the same time, but figured that doing it myself, by myself, one at a time would be the way to do it. After all, the only difference is removing the torque converter bolts and the bellhousing bolts, right?

If this is a parts car you are talking about, its a lot easier doing both in one yank. You don't have to be fussy about banging into anything, and if anything snags , you can just cut it. And you don't need to have the car all that high ( with YOU under it)

True, and good points.
Too bad I removed the parts car tranny first. I'm not thinking of cutting into the good w116 just yet if anything snags. ![]()
