Well, she's got the replacement tranny mounted so far. Now I have to hook everything back up to it.

Lucky for me, when I mounted it to the belhousing, I got the torque converter rotated almost perfectly. I looked at the holes for the bolts, and I could see about 3/4 of the thread holes on the torque converter. I put a small screwdriver into the hole, slid the torque converter over, and in went the two bolts.

Is there a specific torque that these bolts need to be set to, or just crank them on?

Thanks to all who have helped so far. I'm currently trying to get over having strep throat, but I fel like a million bucks right now having that tranny back on there.

Well, the torque converter bolts proved to be as little problem going in as coming out....perhaps 5 minutes in total. All the connections like the shifter, vacuum, electrical, etc. are all back on the tranny. I need to reinstall the flex disk on the front of the driveshaft, tranny mount and crossmembers, fill it, and test it out.

I'll finish that tomorrow hopefully.

Any specific torque settings for any of these bolts I should be aware of?

Thanks.

I finished replacing the tranny tonight on the 80' 300SD....acts like there's no transmission attached. Zip....de nada....nothing.

Torque converter perhaps? Never did quite understand how it couldn't be seated on there properly.....

Rather obvious, I guess, but something with the linkage?

First, I am sorry for your troubles after the effort. That's a lot of work to go through. Don't let it get to you. There are a host of things to check to determine what is going on. Hope that it is a simple one.

You need to check the installation, the linkages and the mechanics of the trans.

You said you didn't understand how the TC was seated.

There is a double slot on the TC that must be lined up with double notches on the trans. The TC slips into the notches / grooves and then the trans goes into position. Once the cases are mated and bolted (I didn't make tight to specs until the TC and flywheel were bolted), you rotate the flywheel to match the bolt alignment on the TC. Then you rotate the engine, pausing to install the remaining bolts (TC to Flywheel).

Good luck
Don

I just finished this job myself about a month ago. If I had seen this thread earlier, we could have had a support group. The torque settings are in the haynes manual, but I didn't do that because I couldn't get to the bolt, with the the support that is in the way. So I took a guess. This may not be ideal, but it has worked for now. These are not torqued down really tight, just pretty snug.(if that makes sense)
Did you end up rebuilding the tranny, fixing the pump. Mine was leaking badly and I changed it out with my parts car (80 300sd) If you did put in another pump, where do you get the parts?
If you need parts, let me know I might have what your looking for.

Neah, don't give up yet.

How is the linkage? Are you sure everything is hooked up right?

Worst case scenario, if you can't do anything about it yourself, you could take it to a shop and have them look it over.

Well hey, what exactly happens? You put the gearshift in drive and nothing happens? The engine just revs freely?

I guess I have been sleeping...

Please back waaay up...

Replaced it with what- a professionally rebuilt tranny?

A used one? Something you rebuilt?

Is the fault in the installation of a known good tranny or something in the box itself?

The tranny is an unknown, seeing as parts around here are scarce, and any good trannies have a good running car attached to them.

The engine revs freely, no ticker of life from the tranny itself.....wonder if I messed up the valve body linkage when I put it together before install.

Nothing at all must mean linkage of some kind, right? How about if the torque converter wasn't on completely or correctly?
