I've rebuilt a few transmissions in my time, and I can tell you this much. The first time, it's a little intimidating. After that, you realize it's all just stuff bolted together like anything else.

Wanna know what's really bad about rebuilding transmissions? Smelling like nasty tranny fluid for four days, no matter how much dish detergent and how many green scratch pads you take a shower with.

I think when I have to pull/install my tranny someday (not a while yet, still runs fine) I will pull the engine/tranny as a unit, do some service to the engine, bolt the new tranny on, and lower them back in as a unit.

You mean the way MB intended? Heh. I actually look forward to doing that some day, simply because you don't have to remove the hood to do it. The hood that stands straight up is the coolest feature on my car, in my opinion.

I've lost count on how many transmissions I have pulled in my life, and I kind of don't want to go down memory lane on any of them. It's one of those jobs I just don't get a kick out of, even though none of them have ever given me a tough time in pulling or replacing. I guess I've been lucky with 99% of them. I haven't pulled an MB trans yet, but I'm sure I'll have to soon. But then again, I think I'd rather cut off my toes with a dull recip saw before pulling another one.

Yep. Only thing I need is a engine hoist....good excuse to go tool shopping.

I'm pulling engine & transmission together from my parts car. Reason? Because I can leave the transmission full of fluid and the seals are more likely to be in good condition when I need it.

If I needed both, I would have pulled both, but i just needed the tranny.

I'm pulling the engine because I can, and I won't let it go to scrap.

As for a hoist, I picked up one $75 a few weekends ago.

I just pulled my eng and trans in July and replaced the new eng and trans
in Aug. did it by my self. not a big deal. be sure to remove the torque
conv bolts before you remove the eng, much easier.

If you have a parts car, remove the radiator, cut out the front piece,
and you don`t have to lift the eng so high. straight shot out the front.

Next time Iam going to put the trans hard lines on before I install the eng
in the car. that was a PITA.

Removing and replacing parts makes you a parts-swapper, not a mechanic. Mechanics have to work with their hands but it is what they do with thier brains that distinguishes them from the wanna-be's. Troubleshooting cars is the same process as troubleshooting airplanes, computers, nuclear power plants, economic systems, or human bodies.

Well, I hope I get at least some points for all I did to try and distinguish the problem ahead of time before finally breaking down and replacing the tranny.

And if I had a shop do it, do you think a "parts-swapper" would do it for me, or a "mechanic"?

Well, replacement tranny is now out of the parts car and I'm tackling the dead one today - IOW, I'm doing it.

I'll let you know how it turns out. If anyone has any tips specific for reinstalling the tranny, let me know, or any quick maintenance I should do on the replacement tranny first.

Thanks.

You get all types working at car shops. When you get your car working, take it to a shop and tell them about your work. They will probably hire you.

Hey, I don't think anyone here is saying that because they removed a tranny they're now a professional mechanic.

When I dropped the turbodiesel engine and transmission in my W115, I took the old one off and put the new one in as a unit. I had to take the hood off for obvious reasons but that was ok. I only wish I could take the nose off as a VW, Volvo, or Saab.

I have taken engines and transmission out and put them back in Volvos, VWs, RX7s, Mercedes, Mitsubishis, and Hondas. I think I also did a Mustang, but am not sure. I have also rebuilt engines but never transmissions. But, since I still do not feel like I am at the same level and most members, I like to consider me an entry-level amateur, a benchracer who seeks to climb on the shoulders of giants.

tranny is nothing compared to an engine swap. The hardest part about a tranny dismount/mount is when you go back to mount it up again getting the splines lined up. everything else is easy as pie.
