Another vote for "how do you know if you have EGR", I have no idea.

To the person with pictures of some box...Cruise amplifier perhaps?

The cruise amp is under the drivers side panel...and I already got mine out to see if I can fix it

I have an EGR valve under the hood. Its disconnected from the vacuum line, I hooked it up once and got a smoke screen out of the tail pipe that James Bond would be proud of.

So, funola, was your EGR computer right behind that little opening, about 5" x 7", in the passenger side kick panel...oriented vertically?

*EDIT*

I don't see an LM 1815 Is it pretty obvious? There's a bunch of stuff in there...
Also, does yours have a huge connector like mine? Its like 5" long.

I'm not sure about this but I think the EGR valve on the 300D turbo's are strictly vacuum controlled and does not detect engine RPM with an LM1815 on the EGR computer like on my 83 240D to control the EGR valve. On the 300D's that gizmo on top of the valve cover (VCV?) controls the EGR. I think you will need the mag pickup, the RPM sensor (aka tach amp) and just wire it up if you want a tach.

That's the route I was planning to go before reading this thread. I have the sensor on the harmonic balancer and a round receptacle on which to put a tach amp...but no amp. I think someone said its a diagnostic plug...either way, the wire from the crack sensor leads to it. I just need the amp...and to run wires from the amp to the tach.

One more component and I'm there!

If that round socket is a diagnostic port, it may not have the proper wiring such as power, and connections to the tach itself. You will have to figure it out and add them.

Anyone know what kind of diagnostic equipment plug into that socket?

I figured I'd have to move/add some wires to that receptacle, I found this schematic and pinout somewhere on here, can't find where it was again...good thing I copied it. It might be from that long thread that you started about repairing the tach amp

Why did you throw the EGR controller away? If you gp to the junkyard, can you find me a tach/clock combo? I need to replace the one I snaked from my 300D turbo.

I don't recall seeing this schematic. I didn't finish drawing the schematic on the tach amp that I repaired thus cannot comment if the schematic below is correct or not. The circular connector pinout looks correct though (from memory).

Funola,
where are you at ? I have 2 tach/clock combo's in my basement, from when I was trying to make the tach work in my 240D...I have no idea if they work though (they were from a junkyard themselves...)

And come to think of it, I also tossed the stock 240D EGR sensor, I replaced it with a 300Dt sensor when I was trying to adapt stock 300D electronics to the tach (never got it to work, might have been the tach itself that I was trying...)

blah

I think that all 1982 and 1983 240D's have EGR.

(assume W123 240D) If you take your air filter off, and look down into the intake manifold and see a butterfly valve (throttle plate) that doesn't quite seal all the way- then you have egr.

I'm in CT. If you have all the parts from a 300D turbo, i.e. harmonic balancer pickup, tach amp and tach/clk combo, you have everthing you need for a working tach for your 240D, so don't knock yourself out looking for an EGR controller. If the tach is NG, I can probably fix it if the electronics is toast and the movement is ok. I can fix the tach amp also. Send me a PM, I maybe interested in one of the tach/clk combo

Angel, I might be interested in one of your tach/clock combos...the one I have is from an SD and I'm not sure yet if I can get it to go in my cluster...I know it won't bolt right in, but I think it will attach to the rear cover of my cluster...I'm not sure about the clock set knob though
I'll send you a PM

selling tach parts for 240D

Want to add a tach to your 240D where the clock is? I have removed all the tach parts I have installed in the 240D since I am in the process of selling the car and the tach parts are for sale:

1. Clock tach combo for the cluster
2. modified EGR computer/ tach amp
3. Magnetic pickup on harmonic balancer.

This is a working tested system. Very easy to install. Here's a video of it
240D video 0-60

$150 plus shipping.

pm me if interested

Question

Hey Funola,

Where did you thread the homemade cable from the EGR controller to the tach through? I can't figure out how I'll be getting the cable to the tach.

Daniel
