Hello Dinosaurs!

Wow, i really brought out the dinosaurs with my last post!

I've never spent $1500 for a car, (but i recently spent $1200 for a VW diesel Rabbit truck) and tho i have lots of stickers, none of them are about veggie oil.

From a somewhat thorough perusal of these forums, i have still to hear of anyone who damaged their engine with vegetable oil beyond a coked injector or 5, and none of mine are showing signs of any dysfunction. Starts on 9 cents, and runs smooth as silk.

But they are very heavy cars, and 25 MPG for a diesel is not that spectacular. When WVO gets a little more scarce (currently i'm innundated with it), i'll switch to one of my VW's that get 40+ MPG. But the real future of the private automobile has to be electric, as electric motors are in the 90%+ efficiency range vs. 30% at best for infernal combustion.

Of course, Mercedes is what the Chancellor drove!

Wow, bragging about trolling. That goes back to what I said about being your own worst enemy.

Sorry to hear you don't care for MB's. Perhaps one of these would be more to your liking:

Now me now me!

OK, here is my question.
I found a 1981 240D Standard Transmission with 111,000Miles. No rust, no winters, stored in heated garage, exterior, underneath, inside and out no signs of wear, tear, rot, peeling, fraying, smelling, molding, creaking, leaking, drooping, smoking, banging, clanging.
New tires, water pump, adult driven only.
OK, so what's it worth? Right now I'm thinking they are asking a couple of thousand too much. But since its a museum piece waiting to be driven in the light of day I am inclined to start negotiations once I get some input from this respected and honored Forum.
After a few answers I'll let you know what the couple is asking. You will be surprised I'm sure.
Thanks for your input!

Wow what a find..what its worth?? I have a "85" 240D thats low miles, well taken of, no rust and has been well loved. I wouldn't sell that car for 10K, A low miles MB, thats been taken car of has lots of miles left. I sure as hell wouldn't put any WVO in the fuel tank either, dont

It is tough to put a value on a car like that. For one thing, there are huge regional price variations.

Be SURE about the mileage. Odometers are easily reset or replaced on these cars, plus, sometimes they just slip. Gotta have records to validate the mileage.

100k is low mileage, however, good chance of it needing an air conditioning rebuild or some expensive front end work shortly.

I think around here a local Euro car retailer had a cherry 240D which eventually sold for about 5k, however it took him a long time to sell it. On the west coast, I think it might have gone for possibly twice that much.

you've asked this question before:

OK, whats it worth? This is a fully functioning, museum piece, no salt, no rot, no surface rust, no worn or faded leather, new tires, new exhaust, new water pump, no fluid leaks, no rain water leaks, no winters, no kids, no way!!
1981 Mercedes Benz 240D MANUAL Gearbox, 117,000 miles.

I know its only worth what they are fetching on Ebay but considering this is a 4 speed manual gear box, I don't know if this increases the value or not. Owner said that he got 40MPG with this car. Is it possible to achieve this figure on a consistent basis if driven very conservatively?
My 300D gets in the mid 20's.
thanks for playing!
You also said you had an 81 240D in a 2006 post, so you either have it and are trying to sell it, or you had one and should have some idea....

It depends- that's my answer and I'm sticking to it.

And no, I won't be surprised. I am too old for that BS.

I did post this month on Sept 6 of 07. No its not mine. but I think seller is asking too much: "Owner said that he got 40MPG with this car. Is it possible to achieve this figure on a consistent basis if driven very conservatively? " Can you get 40mpg with a manual 240D?
When I originally inquired in Fall 06 the asking price was $8500. Then it turned out the owner took it off the market. Go figure.

36 MPG is the best I ever got on my 240D stick.

$8500 is way more than I think it is worth, today.

But it depends..are you in a hurry?

I was when I bought the first one ( 83 300D for $2200- solid car but we put a lot of money in it)

The next one (82 240D stick) $1700 was cheaper, but I looked around.

The next one (80 300SD) was cheaper $900, but I really only needed it for highway driving.

The next one (77 240D) was cheaper yet, $500- it's only a backup in case one of the W123s gets pronged.

What's the next one worth? Well, the one you have described, TO ME probably isn't worth what it would have been 4 cars ago.

I came back from looking at a real nice 200D finback. This is a car I would have leapt at 3 or 4 years ago, but now the only thing that really turns me off about it is the yucky color he reupholstered the seats in (Cranberry!).

My point is there are a lot of personal factors we all have to deal with. It is very difficult to try to be objective about something like that that is at one end or the other of the scale.

Rick

WM seeks BMB

Yes, this Blue M-B is a nice car, but the more I think about it it is way overpriced...due to the owners' emotional attachment to it.
Hey! He has a real nice 1959 Corvette!! Naaaa.
Thanks for all your input! I might pass on this one.
