Get a VW TDI while you can. Quiet, no smell, good acceleration, 50+MPG on the road.

I'll take the reliability of a Honda over a VW any time.

Import FWD cars are much better than they were 20 years ago. My Civic handles and rides great. I easily forget that its FWD.

I had a saab 900 turbo, which was considered a decent handling FWD car for its time. It performed well, but I just never got used to the funky handling near the limit. There is just no way to power a FWD through a corner without massive under-steer. They may perform well and even turn in good track times, but I just don't like their feel.

They may even be popular, cheap, better than a Benz but I don't like their feel. Yes, they have improved in the past 20 years. Even in another 20, I still won't like their feel. Hence, I won't buy a working FWD car for more than $100.

I doubt I'd like the feel of any $100 car.

That is what a FWD car is worth to me

FWD isn't made for performance. Its cheap to make and build, thats why automakers love it. 95% of the drivers don't know the difference, so its a win win.

Well my Civic makes a great commuter car. It's even fun to drive and I've been able to bring home IKEA furniture in it.

Other than the Toyota lets see what comes to mind:
2005 Jetta 1.8
2007 Civic
2007 CRV
2005 Maxima

The Maxima's are the worst, tons of torque steer.

None of them drive better then say a BMW 3 series or any MB. A 3 series with the sport package is better then the whole lot.

The G35 is nice as well. I think its based on the Maxima, and with AWD has a very strong RWD bias. The G35 is pretty nice...
