Engine shock replacement

Went to the car wash the other day to degrease in preparation for an engine mount replacement, and the radiator sprung a leak. So with the radiator and everything out of the way, decided to do some other work as well.

Stupid Q: was replacing the mounts last night and needed to disconnect the engine shocks. When holding the bolt on top w/a 10 (?) mm wrench and using a socket to turn the nut on the bottom, the shock strut simply turns, yielding no progress. What am I missing here? May as well replace them, too, whilst doing everything else. And the oil cooler lines. And the.......
