Engine shock replacement

Went to the car wash the other day to degrease in preparation for an engine mount replacement, and the radiator sprung a leak. So with the radiator and everything out of the way, decided to do some other work as well.

Stupid Q: was replacing the mounts last night and needed to disconnect the engine shocks. When holding the bolt on top w/a 10 (?) mm wrench and using a socket to turn the nut on the bottom, the shock strut simply turns, yielding no progress. What am I missing here? May as well replace them, too, whilst doing everything else. And the oil cooler lines. And the.......

Thanks in advance!

There is a 6mm slot, IIRC on the engine shock shaft that needs to be held. Since I was just replacing mine, not removing and re-using, I just used needle nose type vice grips to hold them.

I use a set of pliers to hold the shock directly.

Thanks, guys--I'll just hold it; didn't know if there was something I wasn't noticing.

Holding the shock body won't help with the lower nut. Look for a 7mm wrench flat on the lower rod, just above the rubber bushings.
