Deflector spring

does anyone know if the spring is only available at the dealer?

BTW, there is no need to remove the entire deflector to replace the spring. The deflector will pop out on each end in order to replace the spring. Its best to do one end at a time.

Spoke with delaer today on that plastic slide support. Apparently, MB refers to the part as a "STAY".... and they just happen to have 2 of them.

I was not aware that the stay was a required part so I bent one of the springs to make it look like the orig. There appears to be no way to make the orig setup work. thats why MB deviced this new spring design and stay.

i just got an 82 mercedes today and my hubby and i can't figure out how to even open the sun roof. we tried to contact the previous owner for help, but no answer. i'm sure theres a simple technique to it.

^^If it's electric, there is a rocker switch on the dash, if it's manual, you'll see a locking device.

i found a note in my DVD manual on the sunroof that it might be a loose slip clutch on the motor. i just went out and tightened the nut 1/4 turn on the slip clutch and everything works fine now.

Dumb question but since I don't use mine much, it may have slowly changed.
Q: How far is fully open? Mine leaves about 6" of the panel in the opening. It looks like there would be room to fully open the space.

good info, i'd better do this the next time i get a chance.

Sunroof will not close

My air dam or wind deflector on my 1983 300d will not retract far enough to allow the sunroof to completely close. Is there a way to adjust this part to provide the clearance required for the sunroof to slide closed without pulling it down and getting my fingers pinched? Thanks for the help!

With your roof open, check to see if there some dirt/leaves etc... under the deflector. it could be rusty and won`t push down all the way.

As I remember, when the roof is closing, it slides along the stainless steel arm on each side, which is attached to the deflector. they will pop off and make sure it is clean under them.

I have seen some in the Junk Yard with the black paint pealing off the deflector, and debris along the tracks and deflector.

Open the roof and remove the chrome tracks and clean under them and the deflector. lube the tracks and pivot points of the deflector with some Syl-Glide. comes in a tube at most auto supplys.

hope this helps some.

Whatever you do, do not bend that tube that the sunroof cable rides in. You will never get it straight again and it is a bear to replace.

I was told not to use anything but the MB sunroof grease.....clean the rails and other parts with alcohol only then apply the grease. You can get the grease in a small plastic container for much less than the dealer package, about $10 I think. Just google "Mercedes sunroof grease". The problem is that WD40 or lithium grease does hold dirt which makes problems for the roof.

I have done everything you mentioned besides removing the chrome and cleaning under them. I did however use Q-tips and rags to clean the dirt from the track. There were a few pieces of debris in the area, which I removed, other than that the unit is actually really clean and rust free. It seems as though the point of contact from the roof as it slides forward is too high or the SS arms on each side that make contact are too low. I thought there may be a way of adjusting this contact point???

Not even sure where the tube you are mentioning is for the sunroof? Thanks for the advice on the grease. I find it hard to believe that Mercedes has created a type of grease that doesn't attract dirt and is not available at the local parts store as a generic brand. Is that really the case? Is it similar to the grease for mountain bike chains and gears (white lightening or clean ride) that supposedly attracts less dirt? It is more of dry wax or film than a grease. Thanks for the advice.
