Cold air intake?

These look cool, but are they not advised. Has anybody seen or used anything like these on their diesel mercedes? Not refering to the propane injection just the airintakes with oil separator...

Those are not cold air intakes they are hot air intakes. The factory intake gets air through the tube in front of the radiator, those get air from behind the radiator. Stupid.

One thing that still bothers me is the fact that the air box on the 87 300D doesnt have a intake duct next to the radiator like the 617's in the W123 and W126 had. So would it make a difference whether it had the stock filter or the "cold air" intake? The intake on the air box just points towards the fender which doesnt seem to get to much air coming through it?

They didnt add the vents on the passanger side fender until the 2.5T came out in the W124.

All of Mercedes' diesel intakes are cold air intakes from the factory.

Wade performance is a complete CON. EVERY ONE of their "cold" air intakes is a HOT air intake.

Don't even consider propane, it is not worth the time/money.

From looking at the design, I don't see how it could increase "performance". Frankly, I feel most of the ads for "performance intakes and exhausts" for most cars is nothing more than cosmetics.

However, I have seen several folks report that the main reason they went to such an intake is it eliminated their problem with broken air cleaner mounts. But valve adjustments, matched injectors, and new engine mounts usually cure that problem.

I believe the original poster was speaking about the oil separator 3/4 down the page. He understands the filters are "not advised".

I might like one of their spiffy red oil separators though.

Yes, the price is certainly right. I made one out of PVC, and the materials cost was close to $20, almost as much.

You're right Ruben. For some reason the 87 190DT had the slots in the fender, the 2.5T in the 124 got slots, but the 3.0T got none.

I'd like to install a slotted fender in my '87, but haven't gotten motivated enough to buy a new one, so as soon as a reasonably priced used one shows up I'll have it painted and install it.

I'm not sure it needs it, the stock '87 setup seems to get plenty of air through the fender without the concerns of a big splash on the right hydrolocking my engine, but it has that purposeful look.

Beware - controversial views below

Although this flies in the face of conventional wisdom on this and many other mortoring web sites, taking intake air from behind the radiator is not IMO an entirely stupid thing to do.

When you are sludging around town, the air behind the radiator will be quite a bit hotter than in front. The engine isn't being used to make a lot of power, and the hot air improves the engine's efficiency.

When you are motoring on the open road, the air blasting through the radiator doesn't actually become that much hotter, and so, the power loss is minimal.

If you want a car for out and out power, or drag strip potential, it isn't an older diesel engined MB. It's a bit like asking someone like dame Kiri te Kanawa to sing with the Spice Girls.

What study did you get that from?

Cold air is more efficient because the denser air makes the fuel burn more cleanly and extracts more energy from the burning process.
