The silver car has issues, but I looked for one for a year or so before I bought mine, the 190D turbo brings some pretty good coin even with the miles and issues. $3500 is probably about right maybe even a touch low.
They never sold in CA, which is why there are few of them, and many of those sold in the rust belt and are in rough shape. Much fun to drive. About a second slower 0-60 than the 300D turbo, but tighter handling and just feels quicker. A little small for me, you'll need power seats if you're 6' or taller.

It is a sellers market for diesels these days. That car would fly with that 602 and get close to 40 mpg. Probably not a bad deal. The Bush Chaney sticker on the bumper was a big turnoff though. I dont see a mercedes as a good platform for stickers though.

We've got an '84 190D na with about 250,000 miles on it. We still pull around 35 mpg with it. 0-60 ain't great but then I'm not into romping on it anyhow. Doesn't really matter what speed ya drive it...same mileage. When my wife first found it out in seattle it was in the San Juan islands covered completly with moss. Had around 150,000 miles on it at that time and she paid $3000 for it in '97. It hadn't been started for over a year so the owner put a new battery in it and it fired the first time without a lick of trouble. The first 75,000 she put on it came in the first 3 years due to her commute ever day. The only major issue we've had with it to date is replacing the vacuum pump. The glow plugs are pretty straight forward to change, and while they no longer build a freeze plug heater for it, it's very easy to fit a freeze plug heater for the bigger engines to it. That said I supsect a freeze plug heater isn't onyour to do list. I have no trouble with starting it down to 0 degrees F without being plugged in. Once I get into the minus digits...pluggin it in is just so dang nice. Keep me posted on which way you jump. I'm gettin really partial to these goofy lil baby benz's.

That looks to be a decent car, Don. It has issues but it is the very rare and desireable turbo. It has had some important things fixed and some important things work fine. I would get the engine checked by a mercedes indy including a compression check. Does it have the original head on it? That would be the year with the number fourteen head, maybe.
I think you are in the ballpark on the price. If it is a car you really like and the engine checks out you probably can pay a bit extra to get it if necessary. The 603 engines are not the paragon of reliability that the 617 is though and are a lot more fussy to keep running right. Why would you give up your lovely 300d? Good luck Tom W

the head is OG.. and was removed and checked for any flaws, warping, etc by a reputable machine shop.
She just sent me a bunch of pictures of all the receipts... they cover an entire kitchen table( a big one to boot) . All the work was done by the same indy and These people own at least 4 other diesels ( two w123s, a w210, and a 124 IIRC) all in tip top shape |

I think 4k for this car would be a good offer since it does have alot of records.. and those are good....just the rust and the minor imperfections subtract from the total amount. Plus it would be a great car to have
I just need some more money for it.. Thankfully the seller is being great and took it off the market.. She has had it listed for 6 months with no bites... but I am going in for the kill Last edited by TheDon; 11-03-2007 at 03:06 PM. |

It sounds like it was taken care of, which as you know means everything.
The most important thing when buying a used MB are service records. Its like in real estate its location, location, location. With MB's its service records, service records, service records.

(the forum time is wrong.. maybe on my end?)
Oh yea.. records are key... I shall pray to what ever god exists to help me get this car tomorrow my friend's (heather) sister(photography major) needs to take pictures of a classic car for a "for sale" ad. While at starbucks a poster announced an Alfa Romeo car show. She wanted to go to it but I said.. "Why go see a bunch of Italian cars when you can have the best(a Benz)".. So.. I think I will have some good shots to use for my ad here and on ebay or where ever I post it.. I would like to get at least $2,000 for it.. I think I might be able to on ebay... |

Well said..
I am kinda interested in the 190D 2.2 non turbo I found... Its an 85, automatic, daily driver.. I need to do a car fax on it *ahem*.... this one is 2500... if the bank wont approve me for a private loan for "school related expenses" than I might take a look at the 2.2 how are those? I was searching here on them and members say they were getting 34 mpg ish... I kinda like that.. only thing about the 85 I found is the lights I also am not liking the color of the 85.. but. I bet a really nice detail job will bring out a shine in that color which I am guessing is like a sandstone or champagne gold... bling bling but I will have to get past those(euros are always an option, thanks to katmac!) I will get more info on this one as well and see which one goes down... I am hoping for the 2.5 turbo since the owners are really great people.. Last edited by TheDon; 11-04-2007 at 07:05 PM. |

what are some qualities of the 2.2 and the 2.5T engine in the 190D?
faults? strengths, etc etc.. |

The 2.5T has power, the 2.2 doesn't.
The 2.5 is a 603 down a cylinder, AFAIK they didn't have the head issues the 603 did. AFAIK they are both very similer, just 603's with cylinders cut off. .

excellent.. excellent
the 190D 2.5 had the head removed after it overheated once.. I like that... well. the fact the head was removed and inspected the person that deals with loans was not in today.. yar. I had to schedule an appoitment for.. Friday since that is my only open day after school. plus the smallest loan they do is $5k.. I can do with that.. I just need a co-signer since I have no credit... Last edited by TheDon; 11-06-2007 at 11:47 AM. |
