Turbo return oil line

I have a 1981 Mercedes 300TDT. The turbo return oil line leaks where it enters the top of the oil sump. I've bought the gasket, O ring and lower rubber bushing and undone the top of the return line from the turbo.
My problem is there doesn't appear to be any room to remove the tube from this area.
Any advice on getting it out would be gratefully received.

According to the 617.95 service manual, the top section of the drain tube should slide down somewhat and then be pulled "outwards" so that it can be removed.

It is a tight fit, be careful not to bend the tube. It will come out. I can't remember the exact technique but it seems like you rotate it towards the passenger side corner and work it out from there.

How Ironic

I just ordered my parts and will be picking them up this afternoon.

Sometime between the ShopForum GTG a week or so ago and this weekend my return line started to leak (don't tell Jimmy I oiled up my engine - he'd be pissed!). I cleaned it up a little last night to be sure that was the issue. It looks to be be the o-rings that connect the top and bottom tubes. The grommet at the pan looks to be fine, but I suspect if you are going to do it right you have to pull it all out, or, might as well because the grommet can't be too many miles behind the o-rings - right?

OK, part of my over do it maintenance thinking, but the parts aren't expensive so why not refresh all the parts while you're in there.

I've done a little reading. I might drop the pan to be sure that bottom piece seats right. Heck the pan gasket probably could use a replacement anyway.... did I mention over maintenance problem

Turbo return line

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be working on it this weekend if the weather warms up(Calgary).
Sorry for not thanking you guys before but, as I'm new to the site, I couldn't find my post.
Many thanks again.

check valve

After reading the post from Dave Morrison I'm going to do the check valve as well since the pan is going to be off..... so that delayed getting all my parts in (had to be ordered). But, hopefully I'll be tackling the job Sunday.

Look Chief!! You better get that thing ship-shape before the next GTG. My faith in humanity would be jolted if I saw oil on your engine. Egad.......
Tables and plates can be filthy. I need a clean engine to eat off of.........

If you have to wriggle the thing back in there, I've heard that grinding out a half moon in the upper pipe helps to give a little clearance on the way back in. But this is only what I've heard, so please verify with someone who has done it. The only time I had to refit a turbo drain pipe was with the head off and, wow, was that a breeze! So maybe just go ahead and do a valve job and head gasket while you're at it? ;-0 .... Good luck!

Seriously

as i remember, pulling the upper exhaust header flex pipe ,and then removing the manifold (intake/exhaust) assembly gives you the access you really need

Was you turbocharger welded to the exhaust manifold?

It can give you access, but you don't need to go through all that.

You just need to loosen up the A/C line mounts from the block and upper oil pan to give a tiny bit of clearance. With a little patience in wiggling it back and forth the upper tube, while pushing the lower tube further down and up by cutting in the excess exterior seal. You can get the thing out and back in with the new seals and gasket.
