I was worried that I had been using the floor sweepings filters on my 616, they were Mann and I get them from a local place that has them on the shelf. Well I went in to check the quality one day and it turns out they have a good supply of the real filters with a nice cotton filter on top. So if your in NH try Robbins auto parts they have the right ones.

Troubled!

Have a Purolator in my 616 right now, put it in prior to reading the informative posts trashing same ... Bought a Hengst to replace it, now this!

Guess I'll go searching for Turkish Frams ... That is a sentence that I never thought I'd utter!

Thanks for all the posts that'll keep my 240D running FOREVER!!!

Sorry I should have posted the Hengst reply here...

Dear Mr Beck,

We appreciate your comments on our website and are happy that our customers are interested in more details of our filters.

As you did not referred to a specific filter, I assumed that you were complaining about one of our filters which are indeed filled with cotton material. This could for example be our E170HN D16 (suitable e.g. for the MB W201 series with 2.5 Turbo-Diesel) or the E196HN (MB W123/S123 and others).
These filters are parallel-flow filters and are filled with raw cotton. This filling is described in the Mercedes Benz standard (DBL 8911, dated 2006-10). As it is in German I translate the relevant paragraph: "textile fibers, preferably raw cotton, with seed vessels and other natural pollutants are allowed. Additives like wooden fibers to increase stability are admitted. (...) Synthetic fibers which allow capillaries are not to be used. To avoid channel-forming, the material has to be filled equaly up to both ends."
I hope that the translation is understandable for you.

We supply this filter in this kind of manufacturing directly to the Daimler Company as we are the OEM for this part (OE-Number A 601 180 01 09).
Thus, the filter you were suspecting to be of bad quality is indeed a standard product for one of the worlds leading carmaker!

As I understand, you found some more foreign material in a filter like bugs and metal burrs. This should not be the case and I have to assume that this is a single case. In any case, the outer material will stop these particles from entering the oil system of your engines.

I hope I could answer your doubts about the quality of our products to your satsifaction!

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards

Wolfgang Stauss

Thanks for posting that reply from Hengst, bigred. It's about what I expected -- Mercedes obviously has to be aware and approve of what's in the filters. I still don't like the idea and prefer a clean filter medium. I'll use the Turkish Fram as long as I can get it.

As long as it'll stay out of my oil stream, I feel like the shredded stuff probably captures more dirt particles out of the oil than a clean ball of string would.

Just so I don't sound like I'm doing something blindly... we drain our oil from the bottom into a large vessel and then pour it through a funnel back into the new oil bottles. It is then used to light our wood stove.

During the process of (slowly and carefully) pouring the oil into the bottles, we have a very good opportunity to see the quality of the oil. We check for metal shavings (engine trouble) and trash (oil quality trouble) - as we pour. Particles would either show up on the funnel, or if nothing else, settle into the bottom of our pan. We would then see it.

Every time I've done this, we've had a black but very clean (devoid of foreign material) bottom of the drain pan after we finish pouring. I have used Bosch oil filters (Will look at the next one to see what's in it, just for grins) - since we bought the car, with the exception of one Wix... which means the car has seen six or seven Bosch filters. We have never seen any foreign material show up in our drain pan... so I can only assume that so far, nothing has seeped out into the oil stream from the floor sweeping filters.

The filters, after a nice drain period, always feel heavier (somewhat, not drastically) after they have been used for 5,000 miles...some of that is suspended liquid weight but some of it I feel must be collected soot and dirt and such from the oil. It seems to be doing a good job.

I had an Oilguard bypass filter on my VW TDI. The filter was tightly wound cotton string.

I would bet on the string over the relatively loose waste cotton any day.

Due to differences in the oil flow from the bypass section of the filter as compared to the full flow section, that assumption in not valid. Any foreign material that escaped from the bypass section should eventually be captured by the full flow section of the filter element. So the fact that foreign material is not found in the pan does not indicate that it was never there.

No way, they are probably one of the junkiest ones you can get. Made in india, the metal canister is cheap and flimsy, the seals are the wrong size, and its filled with all the junk you can imagine, rocks, floor sweepings, etc...horribly dirty.

Look for the Turkish Fram filters at Pep Boys or order a Bosch filter online, they are "ok". Fram is best.
