Needed - used 60X and 617 nozzles

I posted this 15 September but received no replies. Hoping that will change.

I am looking for used, actually shot, original Bosch Germany nozzles for the 60X and 617 diesel engines. They have to be made in Germany which will be etched on the side. They will be used in testing for alloy and hardness specifications so basically they will be destroyed in the process. I have been totally unsuccessful in my attempts to find the original Bosch specifications for these units so I have to resort to this approach. I would be happy to pay any shipping costs involved.

And the answer is yes I am seriously looking at producing new nozzles made to the original specifications and yes I believe I can do this and for a price that is very reasonable. Why?? Because I just had a "new" Bosch nozzle fail in 5K miles and a second one not doing well. And I have no patience with poor quality products.

So if I can get the units, we will see if I can actually pull this off. The skeptics may win but I am still willing to try.

Thanks

I hope you have deep pockets if you plan to produce them. Tooling for that kind of precision ain't cheap.

Are you looking for the internal knozzle or the whole knozzle housing. How did the new ones fail?

I am looking for the two pieces that are the nozzle, not the entire injector. The ones that failed were etched as made in India. One of them failed almost instantly and the other two were getting there. On examination, there were scratches on the needle end....some big ones....basically indicating they were not hardened correctly. Three of them seemed to be just fine...looked fine under magnification as well.

As for deep pockets, have a couple other car nuts involved that love the challenge and feel the same as I about quality parts.

It is quite an extensive process to produce an injector nozzle....what means do you have of doing that yourself for a cost-effective amount?

I replaced 5 bosch nozzles about 8 months ago I believe I still have some of them as I seldom throw things out. I will let you know by 11/23 if I found them.
The Italian company Fratelli Bosio is reputed to make high quality high preformance nozzles which the sell (for my 84 300D) for around $37 each. They might be the better ones to copy.
Have you ever considered developing another heat treatment proceedure for the Bosch India nozzles using a vacuum or inert gas electric heat treating furnace. This would be much cheaper on the pocket book and might yield the results you want with out having to fabricate the whole nozzle (I don't think that the pintal would survive heat treating again).

I was told I the trade school that the what would later be the RoosaMaster (Stanadyne) fuel injection pump was designed and built by Mr. Roosa on an Atlas lathe in his basement. This is the type of fuel injection pump used on most GM diesel pickups and HumVs and the CAV rotary pumps on Ford tractors, Perkins engines and others.
You are the best one to assess you skills and abilities.
Best wishes and good luck.

Answers:

He has a local diesel injector nozzle manufacturer interested.

Only the Nozzle and pintle unit is needed = no shell required.

Roy, you are in on this? cool, this lends some real credability to the thread. if serious nozzels can be made affordably, I bet there is a market for them.

Hey, I had two old injectors rolling around in the back of my car when i got it. I just gave them to the materials lab where I work and submitted a work request to get the hardness checked out. I'll post back with what they find. One of the nozzles was made in germany and the there was made in france so that will be two data points if you like. If there is any specific area you want tested let me know, other wise they will just test what area is easiest to fixture up.

Thanks

Kurt Kiefer

Note:

Please PM or e-mail "old goat" for the address to send them.

We are trying to have good quality replacement nozzles made by a manufacturer in Ann Arbor, MI.

The manufacturer makes nozzles for class eight engines.

I can section the "basket" portion of the nozzle and get dimensions off of it once they finish the hardness tests. I can do the pintle as well. We have a laser micrometer that works on OD's down to about the .0001 of a milimeter . I can probably halfass some drawing up with what I find if you like.

Did anyone contact MB or Bosch and ask for specs?

I hoard old nozzles and have a few brand-new german-made nozzles also. Before you actually prototype a nozzle I think you can get your hands on a new example.
