Is sunroof liner necessary to remove sunfoor?
With a W123 is removal of the sunroof liner necessary to remove sunroof? I saw a reference to W126 sunroof removal without removing the liner.

My experience on the W123 and W124 required removal of the panel to get to the screws that retain the metal panel. Jim

On the W126 the sunroof liner is just held on with clips. It is pretty easy to remove. I think it is the same was on the 123. Just open the roof about 1/3 then pop the clips and pull out the liner. Once you do that you can see how to remove the metal roof.

Works fine unless your problem in the first place is that it won't open 1/3, which is why you wanted to fix it.

If the roof is stuck closed....
...you will need to remove the panel destructively.
Panel is anchored along front edge with snaps, pull down on the leading edge, once free, pull up and forward through the opening. This is why you need it open.... Jim

Not to go off on a tangent... but did Mercedes not see a stuck-closed sunroof as a likely potential problem when they designed it? From a repairability point of view, the sunroof is almost the weakest spot on these cars. They provided for so many other repairs... why did they leave this one so inconvenient?
And... I don't want to hijack the thread, but I hate to start a new one... very briefly, does anybody remember a discussion on converting the sunroof in a w126 to the sunroof out of a later model? It involved changing out the whole unit with more modern parts, and came with a hefty price tag... but there was a part number list of everything that was required. Am I imagining this? Thanks. |

Usually they fail open... be thankful it failed closed ![]() Did you try the bolt in the trunk? There is a manual way to move the sunroof via a bolt in the trunk that is attached to the mechanism. you might be able to get it open enough that way. If the cable is snapped, you might be able to shove it back if you push hard enough.

I'm 80% sure the problem with mine is that the plastic... whatever it is, the plastic rods that pull it back and forward, have snapped in half.
It pops up and comes back down with no trouble. However, when I push the switch to the "open" position, here's what it does. 1. The motor runs normally. 2. The cable pulls the plastic whatever it is back towards the motor. i can hear it traveling. 3. It travels all the way to the back and then the motor stops just like it always does. 4. In other words, the roof opens completely normally, except the actual roof panel doesn't budge. 5. When you close it, you can hear it close all the way. When the broken pieces meet their front halves, timed perfectly for a "Closed roof", the motor stops again. I don't know how it's attached in there. But the motor is pulling something back just like it's supposed to, but "Something" is no longer attached to the roof itself. |

I know exactly how toget them out . . . . Hopefully, by Sunday I'll know exactly how to get them back IN.
Just be careful with the liner. You can bend the metal at the front of it if you're not careful. Know how I found out? . . .
