OD box (Volvo M46)
I have a '85 300D Turbo and would like to get the revs down on the highway. The rearend is not known but likely 369 or 347. The drive shaft link from the tranny to beyond the hanger looks like a good place for a overdrive box and I am very tempted to pull that length of driveshaft and replace it with an off the shelf or homemade od box with a 20 to 25 percent reduction in rpm.
The Volvo box seems to be a perfect pick, however I do not know if they are available in North America. This box would basically give me a 6 speed automatic tranny while the rearend gearing swap would not allow me to do burn outs. Ha Ha. All thoughts are appreciated. |

The volvo tranny is a borg warner. The overdrive was a simple bolt on for that tranny and may have been very similar to ones offered back to the forties on domestic cars.
I doubt it would be a bolt on operation but if you could develop an adaptor to put it in the benz I bet there would be a market for it if not too expensive. Tom W

Adaptor; not a problem
The tranny to driveshaft is coupled with a chunk of rubber with 6 holes in it. This takes 3 from the tranny and the other 3 to the driveshaft. (has a name) It is soo easy to adapt. I have already adapted it to a NP 203 transfer and, with the 29 year old 116 engine, use it on a gm suburban to plow snow. In 4 wheel drive, low range, I have folded the plow in two. The torque on the diesel is incredible.
Have you ever heard of a M46 OD box in NA? |

The M46 was available on the early 740 and 760 Turbos, and some 740s, and the later 240 Turbos. It's an OK box with an add on electrically controled overdrive bolted on the back.
How about a T5 from a Mustang? You would need a manual trans bellhousing, an adapter plate and driveshaft adapter.

Mustang T5
Actually I already have a 86 Supra 5 speed tranny and that would be a nice connect. It may, in the long run, be the better way to go.
Thanks for the feedback |

Some people install Supra trannies in their Volvos, much better trans.
Volvo made a true 5 speed M47 but didn't install it in the turbo models. I would have preferred a proper 5 speed in my 740T. I have a manual trans bellhousing just in case I pick up a late model 940T, then it will be T5 time.
