I read this thread and laughed out loud. When I was still in the MB parts business, one of our used car mechanics ordered a transmission for an '83 300, rough shifting complaint.
After installing the transmission, it still had a rough shift. He asked the shop forman for help. The foreman looked at the vacuum switchover valve on top of the valve cover, you know the rest of the story.
The mechanic asked me if he could have his old transmission back. I laughed and simply said "BULL****"!!!
