Nice one for the money, I think, these days the WVO/SVO interest has run the prices real high on these. The proposed trip could create a memory for a lifetime.... good luck

As for the filters, you didn't say when you were leaving, but if you have at least a week you could order a pile and have them shipped ahead to the seller. They are pretty touchy about anything weird looking going in carry-on luggage.
That reminds me of a horrible incident I had as we were leaving Paris last spring. I had stupidly tried to dig up parts for my (French!) Citroen DS-19 while we were meandering around on the routes nationals in France. I had won several parts auctions on ebay.fr and my plan was to collect them at the end of the trip from a post office in Paris. Well, almost nothing showed up in time there , except for one set of brake pads that I had promised to carry back for a virtual pal of mine (that he won on ebay.fr) on a Citroen forum. We get to the airport and, to my surprise , the security agent opens the carry on and asks "what's this?". (My wife had not packed hem in the suitcase - not really her fault). I tried to explain en Francais that they were brake pads for their national treasure of a car (plaquettes de frein pour une DS-19) but they were trashed. Eventually a set of the same item got across the pond from one of the sellers by itself, so I sent it to my virtual pal whose stuff I had lost. That little fiasco cost me about $60 - and I have no parts to show for it. Rick

This all reminds me of a recent experience my father had selling a car on Craigslist. This is not meant to scare you imagesinthewind, I'm sure your experience will be fine.
A few years ago, my dad bought a mid-60's Oldsmobile on a whim. It was running poorly and he got it for a song. He got it running well again and drove it around for a while as a fun car. It was in pretty good shape but certainly not pristine. Came time to get rid of it so he listed it on Craigslist, with an honest description of the condition (some rust, tires ok, interior funky, probably good for restoration, etc). He gets a call from a guy in California (dad is in remote Eastern Washington) who is very interested and after asking lots of question tells my dad to consider it sold. A while later he calls to say he is coming to get it. He shows up with his buddy, and his parents from England. He and the buddy have flown up from California and the parents have flown from London to Seattle. They rent a car in Seattle and drive out to remote Eastern Washington, the four of them. The plan is to pick up the car, and have a fun drive back to Southern California, showing the English parents, the sites. So my dad is thinking, wow, what an adventure, unknown 40 year old car and all. So the guy starts giving the car a good inspection, lifts up one of the floor mats and finds a rusted out hole, he is looking at the ground. He brings my dad over to show it to him. My dad turns white, he didn't know the hole was there (lets just say that the only thing that matters to my dad is whats under the hood). My dad immediately offers the buyer a significant price reduction (like 30-40%) but the guy says no, it looks like more than he wants to deal with, but thanks for your time and I hope I didn't inconvenience you, have a nice day. The four of them hop back in the rental car and drive off. The car is still in his garage. Any body interested?

Here's my auto parts store supply list, what have I missed?
2 Qts Rotella, 4 in line filters, 1 Qt Diesel Kleen, 1 gallon wiper fluid, 1 gallon coolant. I'm also going to pick up a gallon of veggie oil for emergency fuel. If I need it the jug will then become the fuel can for diesel when I get to a station. I'll buy a cresent wrench and screwdriver there, too. Thought about packing them and then thought about sitting in a small room at the Denver airport for taking a screwdriver. Man, I hate to fly. The terrorists don't need to do anything more to us. The gov't picked up where the terrorists left off! (take off your shoes, all your jewelry, your belt, no knitting needles, etc)

I have a complete small toolbox which I use for circumstances like this. Check it with the airlines. I've taken it on domestic and international flights, no problem at all.
i wouldn't bother with the fluids until I got there. Easy to obtain at auto parts stores. When I did this with my daugther (Denver to LA) I took the train for the adventure (bought a 409d). Amtrak does run across the southern part of the US. Twice I've flown to pick up a vehicle and walked away from it. I always buy return tickets now with the return flight the following day.

maybe some extra hose clamps and some 5/16" fuel line too? Stop at a home depot and grab some weedwhacker fuel hose (only $3) for your injector lines too...unless you know they've recently been replaced. I think 1/8" is the correct mm equivalent - but the 3/32" line has worked just fine for me.
I suppose all this is worst case scenario - but still.

I'd go heavier on the oil and forget the antifreeze ( just use water for the trip) and forget the window stuff ( it's unlikely to work). And some ATF.
If it was ME, I would bring some likely to break ( or pre-broken) parts (water pump, brake pads, fan belt, hoses). Stuff I would be likely to use eventually anyway. You won't be finding any of this easily along the way.

You said PO is having oil changed. Make sure they use a diesel rated oil. Anything else will burn off at an alarming rate. I learned this the hard way with my first diesel. Make sure to check lube in the diff. I'd also add some Startron with every fuel fill up, just in case you've got a science project brewing in the tank. I'd stay away from Biobor as it will kill the fungus allowing it to settle to the bottom where it could clog up the screen. Also make sure you've got a good spare, jack & lug wrench. Might be a good idea to loosen all lugs & re tighten before you leave to make sure you don't have a siezed lug in case you have to change a flat on the road. Check the exhaust hanger donuts. Better to change now than drag your exhaust system down the interstate. Buy a tire pressure gauge & check tires every day in case you've got a leaker, also pressures will drop in the colder climates. Florida diesel is not winter blend, so you might want to top off with fuel before you shut down for the first night. Once you get a few hundred miles north of Fl you should be geting winter fuel which will resist jelling. I'd avoid the SVO as a fuel, just buy a cheap gas can at the AP store & fill with diesel. If you get to the point where you need emergency fuel the SVO would be a fairly high concentration at that point & might not flow well if cold out. Make sure you park with the battery accessable in case you need a jump in the morning. Cold start problems don't rear their ugly heads in our warm climate. I'd buy several gallons of oil rather than qts. You'll use it sooner or later and & it's nice to have if you need. A tube of RTV silicone sealer would be handy. Have some fuses & bulbs in case you blow one. A flashlight is also handy, for repairs & watching gauges if dash lights go out. No travel tool kit is complete without a pair of vise grips and duct tape! I'm sure I've missed a few things, but with all the contributors here I'll bet all the bases get covered.

Don't use the SVO as emergency fuel. It will act similar to biodiesel. It will desolve much of the gunk in the fuel tank and cause the filters to clog. Unless you want to have to stop you are better off w/ diesel for now.
