The IIHS gave the Smart, the smallest car it has ever tested, fairly high marks for frontal and offset impacts, but ding'd it for cervical strain protection; doors opening on impact and the tendency to twist/spin on impact. They also declined to give it a "Best Pick" listing primarily because of it's size and feeling that it was not as safe for American highways.

See the safety cage did its job.
Are you sure it wasn't a s600? Anyways, IIRC she was still alive when the paramedics arrived at the scene. Just for the record, the bodyguard sitting in the front was the only one who was wearing a seatbelt and he survived.

Here's some of the stuff I was looking for. Notice the roof buckling on the W124 in the deformable barrier offset test. Interestingly it doesn't buckle when hitting a rigid barrier even though one would think the rigid barrier would be a harsher impact. Maybe it was at a lower speed. The roof buckling was maybe engineered into the design to further absorb the impact force at the expense of slight cabin deformation. This would be OK as long as it doesn't go much further than that.

No it was an S280. MB makes cheap versions of every S class as hotel cars and taxi's. An S280 is a stripped out W140, with a 2.8L I6 that is found in the C280. So its a dog.

I beleive this particular car had been stolen, wrecked and rebuilt. I'm not 100% sure but it had a history.

Size usually wins. When my buddy got t-boned in his '27 Rolls P1... well lets just say his car drove home just fine, unlike the little Ford.

Crashes

The Smart car survives the "Head On", but you would not!...No room For
"Crumple Zones".

I've decided my next accident will have me in a 14 wheel dump truck 1/2 loaded
with gravel.I will walk away.
Only seen one fatal dump truck accident...Guy suffering a heart attack ran into
a draw bridge on the way up at 55 MPH.
'Took them months to fix the bridge.

Good point, and especially at highway speeds as demonstrated in this clip: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ju6t-yyoU8s but that can be expected of most of the bread box sized cars on the road, remember they are bought for fuel economy, not super safety.

Bigger is not necessary "safer" but personally, in an accident I would rather be in a dodge ram than a smart car!

If you're talking about an accident between a Dodge Ram and a Smart car, yes I'd rather be in the Ram. But if hitting a tree or wall, I'd rather be in the Smart. The Ram would crush you like a garlic press.

That's probably the only time I would want to be in a dodge ram (or any other truck).

The definitive proof bigger is safer

Also notice that the one time a cop is around when someone needs them they can't do anything to stop the drunk driver.
