Lightbulb Resolder Success

Prepping my 300D for sale I decided to try and tackle resoldering the cruise control amp because it only worked intermittently and that is almost as good as not at all. On cold mornings or days it wouldn't work at all and on warm to hot days it would work without interruption. Here is what I found after resoldering 400 joints. My amp was a rebuilt already date code said 92 on it so some joints looked more robust than others. If you want to save time and not resolder 400 joints here is what to look for. These boards are wave soldered at the factory, basically they make small waves in a vat of tin and lead and run the boards over. As the board goes over the level of penetration of the solder depends on the board temp too cold and you get no penetration (similar to welding).

The ones that I believe failed on my board are the joints at appear to be flat, with a pin sticking out. This is opposed to the nice little mound that you see on a typical solder joint. There were probably 50-60 that were this way that when I touched an iron to it, it disintegrated immediately and took a large amount of solder added to the joint to properly mound it back up. Focus on these and I believe you can save your self quite a bit of time and money as opposed to buying a rebuilt that the same thing is going to happen to in the near future.

The cruise control picks up faster now and seems to be less jerky and just an overall beter ride like a Mercedes should be.

You are giving me some encouragement to get mine done. I took the board out of the box looking for any cracked traces or cracked solder joints. but that is as far as I got. did pick up a couple form PNP.

If this doesn`t work might go with the Audiovox ccs-100, there is a thread on it www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=219993

Resoldering

Yep. Resoldered my totally inop cc amp, and now it works perfectly.

Managed to resurrect the wiper delay relay and Tach amp too!

Cool beans!

I've had luck resoldering the Climate Units....but so far no cruise amps....they always failed again. Which is why I am switching to an after market unit. (audiovox)
