Power Window Motor

Gentlemen,

I have a driver's side rear power window on my 1985 300sd that does not go up. While at a Pic-a-Part I took the window motor and gear assembly out of a 1985 420SEL. I assumed it will fit. How do I "true" the motor so it shuts off when the window reaches the top/bottom. Is there any secret handshake to get the arm rest out of the door without ruining it?.

Same car. Some people have written that a 300sd on jack stands does not allow enough room to remove old shocks. Yes/No?

Thank You,
joe marroso

The window motor doesn't shut off at top and bottom, it simply stalls when the regulator reaches its limits. You may need to adjust the regulator so that the window is all the way up to prevent water leaks. I don't remember exactly, seems to me there's a screw that is loosened so that the window can be adjusted up or down on the regulator. Maybe someone else can contribute.

Yeah it should fit. There was a change in the motor and regulator, I think they are different for 81-83ish.

When installing it, line it up with the old bolt holes and marks in the paint. It should have a small chip or scratch where the old bolts were. use that as a starting point and make adjustments from there. Dont forget to use blue loctite.

No adjustment on the mounting bolts for the regulator.

Window channel has adjustment slots.

I recall there is an adjustable stop on the regulator arm. That should provide the top/bottom limit.

the arm rest has screws diagonally under the rest and inside the door handle you may need to pull a plastic insert out with a screw driver.

As for the shocks and struts if I remember it was my back set that turned out to be some real krauts the fronts came out no problem with the car up on ramp lifters, as for the back I had to convince a lube shop to let me use thier lift.

As for the aligning that window motor, expect alot of durogitory comments about german engineers, use a center punch or skinny screw driver to align those three holes, do it long before the sun goes down, and by all means in a nieghborhood free of tweakers that watch you while they tell you that they could do it ten times faster and offer to do so for three cigarettes!

Gentlemen,

Thanks again for your insight. I will ready my epithets and 10mm socket then go boldly with the window motor. I will leave the rear shock replacement to a time when I have more "head room."

FWIW: I had the same problem, bought a pull-a-part motor and low and behold it turned out to be the wiring from my center console button to the left-rear door. I hear its a common problem for one of the wires to break. Before you pull the old motor out run 12v across the two wires going to the motor (you can pull the switch out and with the door panel off you'll see which wires go to the motor... I think they are green and black). The window should go up with the polarity one way and down with it the other way. If the motor is good use an ohm meter to check the wires from the center console switch to the rear door switch. One of my wires was broken, so I just ran a new wire and soldered it in to the connector on each end. I used two-wire lamp cord so I now have a spare wire already run in case the other wire breaks.

my 1983 300SD's windows stay shut. I rebuilt the console switches & magically both back windows began working! I took the driver's front door panel off to investigate.. and hooked a power source up to the motor's wires. I tried pos/neg both ways.. and each time the motor clicked, but did not budge. Does this mean the motor is shot? or is it just stuck? Is there a step by step DIY replacement guide anywhere?

^^What is the amperage of the power source you used to test?
Rear shocks are an easy swap, you don't even need to remove the tires. It's removing the back seat back that takes time, loosen/remove the top nut, jack up the car remove the lower screws, comes right out, install in reverse order.
