Water separation or capture is the greatest upgrade that can be made. Good stuff, seem straight forward.

great threads, why do they die?

This is one of the better threads about upgrading a fuel filter. I really like the idea of converting the housing to make it a spin on no banjo bolt type deal. Great idea.

OK I installed the real CAT Fuel Filter Element 1R-0750 back in 09-15-2009, 12:31 PM (see post #96) and I changed it a few days ago. That means I have used the that CAT Filter for 5 Years.

When I dumped the filter out and let it drian an Hour about 6 Teaspoons of Water came out of the Filter.

I replaced it with another CAT 1R-0750 Filter

Found this interesting filter:

Amazon.com: RACOR SNAPP 23106-02 FUEL FILTER WATER SEPARATOR 2 MICRON: Automotive

Might be an option for those looking for better filtration + easy install. Downside is uncommon and expensive filters.

Please note that's the filter + mount, filters alone cost less and are available from other suppliers.

RACOR SNAPP 23106-02 FUEL FILTER WATER SEPARATOR 2 MICRON

Same "Ease of Use" marketing as "Ready to Pour" 50% antifreeze (And water).

No Replaceable Filter Element Manufactured OR Available for this Series.
All Plastico ,Buy a complete New Unit Each and every time.

If y'all are too Lazy or can't figure out how to change a filter element...
This is the Scam for you!

But you'll still get that Nasty, Stinky Diesel all over your Pinkies changing
out The hoses.

There is nothing wrong with what I have now.

Also some Water Seperator type Filter cannot be mounted on the pressure side of the Fuel Supply System.
If the Fuel Pressure Relieve/Overflow valve is working correctly the Highest pressure in the Spin-on Filter is 18 psi. However, there is a lot of pulsationg going on.

So someone needs to check the filters specs to decide if it is right for their application.
This was from the description in the specs on Amazon "Maximum Flow Rate- 26 gph" I can't remember what the Flow Rate is but there is a flow Test in the Manual for the Fuel Supply Pump. It does say it can take "Rated Pressure- 50 PSI" and that is above what the actual pressure is on My Mercedes.

Relax, I never said there was anything wrong with what you have now - your mod is exactly what I plan to do with my own 617. The Snapp filter would be a good option for people who either don't want to modify their filter head or don't have the ability to. Splicing hoses is easy.

Just for clarification in case someone has not read this whole thread the CAT Filter fits the Stock Housing (the WIX Filter I used first has a fatter OD and I needed to remove some metal) but the CAT Thread ID is way larger and different.
It only takes an Adapter Sleeve to fit the CAT Filter and the allow the Stock Central Bolt to screw into.

If I remove the Adapter Sleeve fromt the Central Bolt it is returned to stock and can again be used with the Stock Mercedes type Filter.

Due to the CAT Filter being longer and the casting of the Power Steering Pump Bracket being directly under it the the Filter Housing needs to be moved so the CAT Filter can Clear the Bracket.
Anyway that is what I remember about it.

The other Filter Mod that is in this also one of the Subjects of this Tthread uses the Baldwin Filter with a drain and you do need to modify the Housing and when that is done you can no longer use the Stock Mercedes type Filter on it.

However, if you find youself in a pinch you can use the older VW Rabbit Fuel Filter on it as it fits but the VW Rabbit Fiter is like the Mercedes Stock Filter being a 10 nominal micron Filter.

But there is still a benifit as the Filter is larger and has a drain.

There was a few People using the FM-100 and recommending it.

You could start a Thread and ask where and how the Others mounted their FM-100s.

Go to the Standyne site and look up the specs. If it can take 18 psi it can go be installed anywhere before the Fuel goes into the Fuel Injection Pump Housing.

Thought I'd mention that there's a cheap, easy way to run the 7591 filter without drilling or machining anything. Use a timesert 141552 as the thread adapter. It's M16x1.5 on the outside and M14x1.5 on the inside. Won't drop into your filter either.

That's a great option, I'd have strongly considered that had I known about it at the time.

Still loving my 1R-0750 secondary and Griffin GTB228 primary. Drain water and trash out of the settling bowl occasionally. I run a 30 micron element in the Griffin and have had to change that a couple times, but am still running the original 1R-0750. I carry spares of both in the truck.

When I looked this up on eBay it said "Time-Sert 141552 M14 x 1.5 x 16.0 Metric Carbon Insert"

What is the "Carbon Insert" about?
