new windshield question

I need to replace my windshield. I can go through the insurance and get one for free by law but it wont be the correct glass. I also want to have my car painted so I need to get a new gasket and probably clean up the gasket surface. Would POR-15 on the gasket area cause any issues?

I need to do the rear glass as well since I found evidence of some rust.

I'd wait for the paint and do it all at once. Thats what I'm doing, I have a little crack that I am ignoring for the time being.

Getting Sekurit glass can be kind of hard, but you can usualy pick from a couple other good European brands. Just stay away from the Chinese crap.

If you plan on showing it order a new one from the dealer so it has the MB star on it, that way you won't lose points.

heh... I bet I can get the correct glass for free from the insurance

I am waiting for my bush bucks so I can go ahead and start prepping the car for the metal work it will need.

I kinda want to pull the interior out, again, and POR-15 the floor pans and sound proof it all.

I've got a small rust issue that needs to be taken care of and just repaint the entire car since it was painted once in the past and the paint is shot now. I've been saving for something and I think It's time to get my car spiffy again.

seriously, I have to pull the interior again, the darn rear parcel shelf isn't sitting right and I need to tuck my wires going to the sub.

Anyone know the site for the anodized aluminum stripper and polish, I remember it being BMW based...

oh and once the car is back to perfect, it's getting appraised for my own good . That way when I do sell it on CL for 7k, I can back the value lol

If your going to get it painted might as well remove all the trim yourself.

The insurance company will just give you a list of glass places they use, pick one and go see what they say. The guy I used looked for Sekurit which was like $700 vs $200 for the Asian crap and couldn't find it. So I settled on Pilkington which is what Volvo uses from the factory. I figured if they used it, it must be a pretty good brand. When I get it painted I'm going to have them order a Sekurit so all the glass match's, I don't care if it takes two months.

I can't wait to get the SDL painted, it looks like crap.

The $600.00 you are waiting for isn`t going to cover much. maybe add another zero.

Totally agree.

To be specific, insist on SEKURIT, SIGLA, or if you have to PPG.

NOTHING else.

I made the mistake of letting them allow me to use XYG glass.

Very very cheap for them. (insurance)

"XYG" glass is Xingyi Glass company out of Shahghai, communist China.

Scratches easily, risk of clouding, optical distortion, and god knows what else.

If anyone came past my house at midnight and heaved a brick or a pumpkin through the XYG windshield, on the 560SEC, it would not hurt my feelings too bad.

Just PM me when you'll be in the area, and the car will be in the driveway that night, and not in the garage!!

Yes it's good. I think it is OE or OEM equipment for some Mercedes Benzes.

Made in Germany, where really, really good optics is a long standing tradition.... (Zeiss, etc.)

Thanks for the reply Jim. A couple of weeks ago I took a big stone to my windshield on my 83. I had to get it repaired right away as it was in my direct line of sight. I went to safelite as it was one block from my work and had a new one installed. Ended up with the SIGLA glass for 190 dollars. Very nice installation, the manager loved the old benz and even gave me a can of really good glass cleaner and a box of of paper towels. I was really impressed with the level of service that was provided.

E-code glass is what i use, i got the tip from a friend years ago. E-code has 3 extra layers of plastic infront of the usual glass. Doesnt look any different, but i can deflect rocks that would deafen my passangers and never even leave a mark.

My CDI has the rain sensor... and the dealer actually has cheaper glass than aftermarket. The glass costs $400 from the dealer and $800 aftermarket. Since the rain sensor is actually embedded in the glass this probably isn't the case for the older cars, but it might be something worth checking out. The grand total cost (deductible plus insurance payout) was >$700.

I had a Pilkington installed in my W123 with a new seal. It was a good quality piece. The brand you dont want is Vitrex and Vitex.

I've tested at PNP and know how to remove all the trim. 1. However, removing the drip rail trim means probably needing to replace the top black trim part. Is that available? Also, how do you reinstall the drip rail without chipping the new paint?
2. To remove the window trim, you must first remove the window gaskets. I've not been able to do this without damaging the gasket. New ones from the dealer are $$. Ideas?

a new gasket is like $80, mine is shot so destroying it is cool.

I think the drip trim on the roof of the car can stay on if painting the car, just cover it.

installing stuff without damaging paint... painters tape, layers of it.
