Easier said than done.
First I have to have the locksmith out to make a key for the tumbler that is in the car. To be able to turn the tumbler, pin it and remove that tumbler (or start the car), at that time (after key is made) I could drive the car to the dealer with the new and original keys. This is a fine mess I got me into Ollie!

Would have been easier (and cheaper) for the locksmith to come out and make me a key. It isn't the laser cut key, but a steel machined key. I'm going to have over $300.00 in the ignition switch alone by the time I get it fixed...But I do not want to take the steering gear out and grind the steering wheel lock off. And....I want the original capability of the master key locking the car and being used for the ignition and of course the Valet key.

wait, you got a new tumbler and key from the dealer right?
you may be able to just call them, and have them fix it for you free since they screwed it up.

Yep I ordered the Valet key and a new tumbler with Master Key from MB per my VIN. My original door(old master (second)key without the red dot) works in the doors, trunk and glove box. This key is original to the car. The new keys have the screwed up opposite pattern on them(both work the tumbler). So, yes, a call upon the dealership will be in order as soon as I can get the car started. That takes the locksmith making me a new key for the MB generic tumbler that is in the car now. Luckily for me, the tumbler in the lock takes a machined key and not a laser cut one. Much thinner than the original key.

I really do believe that the key maker inserted the key upside down to make the pattern exactly opposite of my key. Only way i can conceive that being able to happen. Or they use a computer generated cutter like an NC machine and they somehow put a mirror image into the machine. Flippen AMAZING!

ok, I still don't understand.
you have the mb tumbler in the car now, and the key they sent with it does not work? does your original key work? how did you get the tumbler installed if the keys don't work? you have to have the key in the tumbler to get it installed.
gimme a step by step. is the problem that you just don't have the knowhow to remove the tumbler? if that's all, just unscrew the collar, and pull out the tumbler, with paperclip in the hole it's that simple.

ohhh, now I understand, this is a different thread than the OP... you still have not removed the original incorrect tumbler from the car! I got ya now.
anyway, if the key that came with the tumbler works in the tumbler, then it's not the key that is wrong, it's the entire set. it sounds like a tumbler pattern got put in wrong in your vincode or in their computer when they ordered your replacement.
that might be trickier than just getting the keys swapped.
does your steering wheel lock with the key out?

I took the tumbler into the locksmith and he said the keys were worn. Cut two new keys at a cost of $30 each. Tumbler works like new.
So I reinstalled the tumbler and no luck at all. Locked up tighter than a bulls ass in the fly season.
So I used the sander and shook out the tumbler assembly again. This time I spent an hour working the locking mechanism. I think I found the problem.
When I turn the lock to the off position, there is a lever in there that must be pushed in. Then you can turn the ignition assembly with a screwdriver. But when I turn the steering wheel a little and the steering lock clicks and locks the wheel, that lever will not release until it is pushed to the right. In looking at the tumbler it appears the key pushes that lever in to release the steering lock. But there is no way the key will push that lever over to the right.
My thinking is that there should be something that prevents the steering lock from sliding over that far, or that little lever in there is too worn and the wear makes it not work anymore.
I think the lock assembly has to come out. I studied that for a long time and it seems the steering column will need to be removed to get to to it.
Anyone have and experience pulling a column on a 126? How about repairing the steering lock?

Old Dies, Go buy an NEW MB tumbler NOW! Do not pass go. Take you old tumbler out and spend the bucks for a MB VIN keyed Tumbler. My problem is a bit different as i don't have a key to put into my old tumbler to turn it to the position to remove the collar and tumbler. But you can Da&n well bet I'll put in a new MB tumbler keyed to the VIN in this car just as soon as I get the wrinkles ironed out of my problem. DO NOT DINK AROUND WITH AN OLD LOCK. IF you can get the key to turn to get the tumbler out DO IT NOW! before it will not come out. New tumbler has TWO pins protruding out the back that actuate the steering lock. Your locksmith treated you right, mine will rip me off for $125.00 to come and make me a key so I can get the old tumbler out. Still it is worth it not to have to tear into the steering to grind off the post to take apart the switch/lock assy. TOO MUCH WORK and then you have no steering lock again.

I am having a hard time getting my mind wrapped around how a new tumbler will solve this problem. Yes, there are two pins on the end of the tumblers assembly. They go into two holes on the round metal part that when turned pulls out the steering lock, and when turned further twist the ignition switch on the rear of the same assemble to start the car.
Like I wrote, there is a small lever that slides back and forth in the round part at the end of the hole. That lever has to get pushed in and then slide to the right to release the steering lock. Just how that is done with the tumbler is not real clear to me, but it must work somehow or none of us would be able to start our vehicles.

If you look at the tumbler you will see that the tip of the key sticks through the back a bit. Is it possible that the KEY tip moves that little lever???? I don't know because I have never seen the inside of where the tumbler goes as mine is still in the Flippen ignition.

My lockset broke around Christmas, 2006, so the details are a little fuzzy.
I couldn't turn the key. The tumblers seemed to be hardened, couldn't drill it. It was a royal PITA to install the steering lock assembly. I got mine from ******** AZ. Had to get in and grind the top of a pin off so the unit would come out. It was hard to drop the column, kept getting hung up on dash. Eventually I got it installed and it works well. Only problem is I think I cracked one of the dozens of wires under there. Now the fuel gauge reads full, temp reads hot, no glow plug light, and other things.
Good luck.

The locksmith just left. He made a new key in about 10 minutes, then he popped the tumbler out and put my new one in VOILA! I have ignition. It was expensive for the new key, but he did cut me a break as the tumbler removal and replacement(my MB tumbler keyed to the VIN) because he was able to make the key so quickly. It was an MB tumbler but a generic one with a machined key and was easily made...at least he made it look easy.

Anyone in the Antelope Valley that needs a key made or locks made Kwik Key is the one, ask for Carlos. He is flippen amazing at this stuff. He was here less than 20 minutes, but he did say that he has taken hours to make a key and take out the assy.

So Freesil is blessed. She lept into action as soon as the new tumbler was installed. Sitting for almost 3 weeks. Started right up.
Good Girl Freesil!!!
