Help Jeep-OM617turbo swap intermitten power??
OK...Still having trouble with my 1963 Jeep FC170 with a OM617 with auto (from a 1982-3? 300SD) to a divorced transfer case (the build: http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?t=123204).
First of my camper is parked in the bush (forestry student as is home so when I am in the bush no access to internet and 2 hours to get parts!!) So originally my boost line to the pump blew off (forgot turbo made boost) now fixed (may still have problem with vacuum hose so I will change it later). wow great power again (on dirt roads with 8% grades) Engine starts right up...with or without glow plugs (blows a little blue but sits 2 weeks between moves 5 miles). Engine makes good power and lots of pull...then just makes no power??? I drove the 300sd for months and have not change pump timing..In the car the once in a while it would stumble at idle and make no power then run great...but only once acted up like..."am I going to have to walk home". The whole engine was swapped in (with crossmember, engine and transmission)...I updated the primer pump, new fuel filters. From the fuel tank I have two filters then a lift pump, (2-4lbs) and all new lines. I took the truck for a 15 mile drive (ran hot need more air flow under the cab, but with the dog house open it cools)... and had all the faith in the world then all of a sudden no power!!! By then it was pitch black and I could not see a thing...Idle fine but did not want to rev, once the turbo spooled it made power...So it now sits abandoned in the bush for 10 days till I get back up to get it to run. Not sure were to start...Please help me from swapping a chev 350 in... Last edited by thedjjack; 08-08-2008 at 03:31 AM. Reason: need to learn to spell |

Could be bacteria colony in the tank. I would try a good dose of biocide.
YOu're barking up the wrong tree with timing, IMHO. Tom W

What type of fuel tank did you use? Is it vented?

Probably a fuel delivery problem unless you have a non-standard air filtering system on there which is doing something odd once in a while. It's possible it's the tank vent, but if the problem solves itself without venting the tank, it could be something else.

Sounds like it could be suking air into the fuel lines.

Engine did act up once before major when I pulled on a gravel road slow with a steep grade.
I was think tank vent. Right now I have a plastic tank that self drained the other day (about 10L due to parts guy selling me a tank plug that was not petro rated (ahhhhh). Tank will be swapped out in 3 months when I get it back to the shop, tank should be free of bacteria since it is all new fuel!! I will check the tank vent or leave the cap loose for a while. The lift pump I have is outside that tank and pulls through two filters (I was thinking of eliminating it from the system since it is not required) Thanks for the ideas!!!! Where's the pickup in the tank? Is it possible you are sucking air in the tank? I know when the flat tank in my 300TD gets low and I take a sharp corner, I suck air.

I was thinking sucking air in the tank too. I have about 15L in it (about a 90L tank from a gas van).
It idles fine just will not rev in gear...If you neutral the transmission you can feather the rpm up then it revs once over about 2000rpm (no tach yet) once the turbo gets spooled (love the sound of the turbo since it is inside the cab with me) |

Could be a problem with your lift pump too. So you're not using the lift pump attached to the IP?

using all the stock Mercedes pumps on the motor with stock filters all as Mercedes did it with newer primer pump, and new filters. Then new lines to the back at the tank I have a pickup in the tank then another stock plastic filter then another filter and a lift pump that puts 2-4lbs of pressure into the lines to the stock filter at the motor (made a diagram).
Just seems strange that it idles but will not rev until turbo spools, I am such a newbie to Diesel.... (Mechanically I am good built the truck myself except the drive shafts I had done at a shop and the frame welds I had a certified welder do as required in BC for a safety inspection) Thanks for the help... |

Since your setup is so unusual, to test the tank, second pump and filters, I would get a soda bottle, fill it with fuel, and plumb it to the OE primary filter with the return line also going into the bottle. Put the bottle in the cab above the engine and run it this way and see if it runs ok. If it does, the problem lies somewhere back towards the tank. If the problem persists, it lies somewhere on the engine side of the system.

My problem is it run great most of the time and then bad?
I am going to remove the rear pump and filters at the tank. It seemed to die when I had to drop the rpm and speed on a little hill that has bad section at the crest as I started to throttle up it lost power. then I had to feather the throttle to get another km where it could not climb a small 7% grade so I rolled it down hill into a recreation site and left it parked. When I get back it will probable run again. Do the factory lift pumps or injectors ever get air leaks anywhere? (since the car had troubles a few times when I drove it around for 3 months (the body was rusted out and it only has 140,000miles on the drive train) Do the injectors ever act up prior to needing a rebuild???? |

The original factory style primer pump is notorious for leaking. It is white and mounted on the side of the injection pump. The new type is black and works much better. I t is almost defiantly a fuel supply problem. Why are you using an extra electric fuel pump?

i still like the idea of isolating the engine or fuel tank problems by plumbing a smaller tank setup to the supply and return on the engine and seeing if that'll run it. Kerry's post above me would be the first thing i'd check if the new tank setup gives you the same problems, but if it runs fine on a different tank maybe the fancy lift pump setup you got is to blame
