Just got "scolded" by my mechanic for using B100...

So yes, it has clogged my fuel filters faster than regular dino diesel would have. I've been using professionally processed B100 (bought from a gas station in MD) for about 3 months now, and my car has been running great. He basically accused me of putting old veggie oil in the car, which is not the case. Anyway, you'd think a shop that specializes in older diesel benzes would be accustomed to customers using biodiesel.

Yes, I know, there are mixed opinions on this, and I know, I technically SHOULD be running regular diesel (although b100 hasn't really been proven to wear engines out any faster, just clogs filters, injectors, and eats rubber hoses faster).

Thoughts? Similar experiences?

Well brewed B100 is fine, especially in "older" Diesels. There's a "purge" period where all the gunk is cleaned out of your system and you may go through a few filters in a short time but in the long run, you will have the same or fewer problems with the B100 as D2.

Like Evan said. B100 is solvent and cleans everything out. That's what is clogging up the filters. once that period is over, your engine is cleaner and the filters won't continue clogging at such a fast rate.

I've seen pics of engines disassembled after running B100 and they looked shiny and new.

Sounds like he does not know what he is talking about.

Ask your mechanic what he found in the filters.

If he found evidence of a rubber fuel hose, did he replace the "disolving" hose? If he found little black bugs did he suggest a tank additive?

These guys have been great, honestly no complaints until today. However, whenever I mention anything to do with biodiesel, they get a blank look. Either they don't know much about it or for some reason don't believe in it as a fuel. Maybe an older school diesel mechanic mentality?

I could understand if I was running B100 in a brand new TDI, but these things are proven to thrive on this sort of fuel.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I have been running B100 for awhile and have not had any issues. My mechanic knows these cars very well and he recommends it. Like someone else said there will be an initial period of all the gunk getting purged out and clogging the filters, but after that you will be all set. I do mix it wil some regular diesel for the winter. About a 50 / 50 mix.

Sounds like its time for a new mechanic that is a little more familiar with B100 if you want to continue to run that.Only probs you will likely encounter with it is clogged filters at first and possibly weeping fuel lines over time.Nothing else will be affected but those 2 items.

Where in Maryland have you been getting the B100? I just bought an 84 300D and want to start running at least some B and I'm moving to Baltimore over the next two weeks. I've heard that there is a BD co-op in Baltimore, but that is the extent of my knowledge.

I bought 8, 5-gallon carboys and have been making monthly runs up to Taylorsville Shell Taylorsville Shell in New Windsor, MD. Currently it's about $4.70 a gallon. Here's their contact info, call before you go up to make sure they have it in stock.

Local (410) 635-8901

New Windsor, MD 21776

I think they BD co-op in B-more has unfortunately been having problems with their supplier which has caused some issues. There's a new one that just formed in MD near College Park called "Green Guild". Here's their site: www.greenguildbiodiesel.org/

My local independent MB shop refuses to work on cars that run on WVO, and will not allow a car that uses biodiesel to run in the shop. I run B99 biodiesel year round, so I guess they won't be doing any work on my car!

Before using B99 I replaced all rubber hoses with marine and viton hoses from **************.com (they were all leaking anyway) and after almost a year I still don't have any clogged filters. The car is very zippy, so no performance issues either. MPG is usually in the mid-30s or better.

All i can say if i went to a shop and they told me that i'd roll my eyes and walk out. From a mechanics point if it's so bad and horrible i'd be telling them go for it that just means i'd be seeing them more often so maybe they know it probaly is great stuff just wish they made it like ethanol and mandate a % or make it so they have to sell so much it's crazy we want it they wont make it it's the durr factor

I guess I'll run a tank of dino-diesel and a can of SeaFoam after having my filters changed, I figure that will help clear my injectors if there is any gunk in them. Anybody use the stuff? I've been using it in my 1976 Honda CB and it works wonders. Really cleaned the carb and injectors and brought the "zippiness" back.

Sounds like you need to educate your mechanic on biodiesel and how it differs from straight veggie oil.

There is no reason to run a tank of petro diesel and a can of Sea Foam. Biodiesel will clean out the fuel system. And it all ends up in you fuel filters. So you may have to change them out a few times. Once the system is cleaned out you won't have to change them for a good while after that. I have probably over 10k miles on my filters now after changing them out a few times.
