No GP Cold Starts
Quote:
Yes , easily down to 60* F temperatures if the engine is in decent shape and properly tuned . SWMBO's 1982 240D with 310,000 miles will start on the first crank down to 57* or so .

123 wagon pick-up
Have seen a real sweet 123 wagon that was made into an el camino-style pick-up. Has the bottom half of the rear hatch/door as the tail gate and the factory tail lights. Took a picture of it on my phone. Will post a picture if I can figure out how to upload it.

Bigger displacement diesels don't need the glow plugs for some reason, and some are designed to take ether as a normal starting aid.

You'll note that I said My cummins does not. It is a 4B. they do have a lower compression ratio than our benz's. prolly helps on the ether thing.

My Cummins has stickers everywhere warning of ether or starting fluids. At -11F it starts but the fuel presumably was gelled up.

I really really had to stare at the pictures for a while and finally figured it out! It's a VW "caddy" pickup rear cab section and tailgate. I knew it looked very very familiar but wouldn't have imagined it was vw stuff. Here's the tail tail (tail) sign:
Very neatly done. |

Our Cummins, an M11, has an IH Ether System installed. There's a button on the dash and a bracket under the hood for a large bottle of ether. (We don't use it, we just plug it in when it gets cold.)

The Cummins and a lot of truck engines are Direct injection and usually don`t have Glow Plugs.
It seem most automotive Diesels have GP, and have a swirl chamber the fuel is sprayed into. This is the way my Datsun (Nissan) Diesel is. I do know if the GP give me trouble it won`t start, or will have to glow several times and will knock, bang and jump around till it warms up. The IHC 466DT engines we had at work, didn`t have GP and would start usually w/o any hesatation.Drove them from 81 to 06. I tremember that 220 pick up when it was on E-bay. good a forum member has it now instead of the JY. Interesting observation to notice the bed is a VW Rabbit PU bed and tail gate. Wondered how it would be made leak proof between the cab and bed. The neighbor has a 72 220D in his field HMMM . Charlie
