The fuel gauge should register when the key is in the run position.

I think the leaking DV seals can allow air to leak back into the IP and cause it to loose its prime. Try priming the heck out of it.

Well, I tested the glow plugs --- they all seem fine from a resistance reading perspective.

I have her hooked up to a jug of fuel and with a LOT of cranking; she almost started. Time to charge the battery again.

Preliminary findings --- I think I just ran out of fuel as I drove into the garage last night.

Got closer ---- I even cracked up an injector line......sheesh. Time to charge the battery again. Have any other w126 owners run out of fuel? HOW much air does get in the system??

He's gone the full route on that. Removing the injectors is usually the last resort but it does offer the benefit of zero compression...........thereby allowing quite a bit more starter time without overheating the starter or killing the battery.

I might agree with this approach on the 603 because they are very difficult to get started after they lose their fuel.

Technically, you need a new set of heat shields when you put the injectors back it. He failed to mention that in the procedure.

Would removing ALL the injector lines at the engine be helpful? Or should I just remove ONE? I'm NOT into removing the injectors...........today.

Good thing, I bought a 1978 240D 4speed earlier this week, huh???

Yeah, yeah, yeah ---- but HOW does one run out of fuel in the garage? Did I run out JUST as I turned off the key? Priming a w126 is a PAIN. I'm not charging the battery for the 3rd time.

Anything else I should check? It cranks and cranks and cranks.....as just as the battery is about ready to die, she coughs. The oil pressure builds as I'm cranking....

Time to fix the fuel gauge, so it works ALL the time. Cluster grounding issue.

If the backup Mercedes Diesel always starts, drive that and get rid of the other one.

Alternatively, get a backup like a Dodge Caravan so you're incented to keep your Mercedes Diesel reliable.

When I ran mine out, it was absolutely bone dry so it had air everywhere it could get air. When the folks got there an hour and a half later with about ten gallons of diesel in various containers in the back of the truck, after we refilled mine started the first try. Floored it, held the starter for what my grandfather measured at somewhere between 50 and 60 seconds; the "almost-got-it" sounds started at 45 seconds or so and it was running shortly before 60. The only time I ever ran it out, that was the restart procedure. Never touched a filter or an injector line.
