There are many differnt styles of Easyouts. The squarish ones seldom expand the bolt as the spiral Easy outs do.
The edges on the Proto on the left can sometimes be damged on a hard bolt so the square ones in the pic on the right are stronger. Snap-on makes some that are square but has a slight twist to them at the tip but I could not find a pic.

What he said!!!! The spiral easy outs didn't remove the OM606 GP from a friends car, but the square one worked almost instantly. He got it from NAPA (the first time that store has EVER been useful).

You should get the biggest vise grips that will still grip the protruding part and lock down on it mightily....... You are on the right track first!

I don't think I'd put myself in line with that GP with the engine running. Ask Dick Cheney how it feels, ...

Don't you mean Harry Whittington? Unless you are talking about the recoil from the shotgun.

No, actually the only thing that happened is the head started to spin freely. The glow plug is stil fully functional, I connected the wire to it and glow system works perfect. Still needs to come out sooner or later...
I will be experimenting with a glow plug on a bench today to see wich bolt out or easyout would work best.

So today I attempted to remove the broken glow plug, it was soaking in penetrating fluid for a week. I twisted off the top connector exposing the center wire. As much as I twisted and turned the wire did not come out of the glow plug, so I cut it off. First I used an external bolt out to grab the glow plug, and it grabbed it pretty well. Little by little I unscrewed the glow plug, but once the threaded area was completely out the glow plug still refused to come out! I kept twisting it at the same time applying upward pressure. it was slowly coming out, and then the threaded part broke off. I stared using a smaller size bolt out and kept twisting. One the glow plug got about %50 out it seemed to have stopped coming out. I tried drilling and tapping it but with the center wire still in there is was difficult to drill down. I finally was able to thread a screw in there and started pulling it, glow plug did not budge and thread broke inside the glow plug. After 5 hours I am sick and tired of this I also drove around at full throttle without the glow plug coming out. needles to say I had enough, the way I feel about this right now this will be my last "new" diesel if I have to deal with this s**t every 50k miles!
I am taking the car to the dealer, anyone knows how many arms and legs I will have to shell out to remove this plug? Anyone has any recommendations of a good shop in bay area who would deal with this sort of thing on regular basis?
sorry for the long post just venting a bit cause I am so freaking fed up with this

Can you get the threaded part out of the plug? Seems to me you have this just about done - I would hate to give up now and go get fleeced.

If you can get to the bore of the plug remnant, you can try threading a rod into it and making a slide hammer to knock it out. Try knocking it in slightly, and soaking it with penetrant, turning it slightly, then knocking it out.

Good luck.

Jim

the threded part is out, the glow plug is half way out.. I tried to thread into the glow plug and pull it using a screw and a nut but the threads broke inside the glow plug before it budged. It is also difficult to drill because of the high pressure rail that's in the way of the drill and the center rod is still inside the glow plug. The perfect solution would be an external type bolt out, the one I've been using that fits ontop for the glow plug, but with threads on it so the pressure could be applied by screwing in a bolt against a socket or something, I doubt such a thing exists...

Check Forced Induction's post with the link to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koghDoROFko

at 35 seconds we see the guy threading a tool on the stub of the electrode and then, once it is seated, he keeps turning it in the same direction until the electrode snaps off and he then removes it (by about 45 seconds). If your glow plug electrode is not threaded (it isn't on my 1998 E300D TurboDiesel) you can always try threading it - may be more difficult now with it flopping around, and if it can't be threaded try a Vice-Grip with a needle nosed tip and latch onto it and turn it clockwise until it snaps off.

Once the electrode is gone you can try a tap on the ID of the remaining chunk of glow plug. You may have to drill out some junk first. After you tap it, you can thread a rod in there that is long enough to give you a bit of throw with lump of steel that fits over the rod that you capture in the direction of the plug with a nut and washer, as well as in the removal direction. Then knock lightly in each direction to free the thing up. Once free douse it well with penetrant and Diesel or something known to loosen the black, caked carbon. And then try to find a position that lets it slide out. If you can't find one, I would add more penetrant/lubricant/solvent and let it sit for a while and try again. But the idea is to try to get something screwed into the plug remnant that you can use to mechanically manipulate the chunk, then get some solvent/lubricant/penetrant into the area that is tight.

Jim
