Question Zimmerman Rotors + Mintex or PBR "advanced ceramic" Pads? Which one?

Well, I am soon going to be putting new rotors on my 300SD as the front discs have a pretty good lip on them and I don't want to wear all the way through them. They've been on there for about 60k and the "wear slots" (ATE Power Discs) are all but worn away, it looks like a normal rotor now....

I have a set of Zimmerman Cross Drilled Rotors + both "Mintex" and "PBR Advanced Technology Ceramics" pads.....

Which pads should I use? I am unsure on the "Advanced Ceramics"....do they wear the rotor more? If they are known to be good I will use them, but I also have the Mintex, which seem to be closer to the OEM compound....but I'm worried that they will be dust monsters.

Anyone have any experience with these pads? Which one should I use?

Anyone have any experience with either of these types of pads?

Ive used the mintex reds before, either is fine if not overkill for your situation. I prob wouldnt run x-drill rotors on it, waste of $ and they dont last as long. but if you've got them, i'd use the mintex and return the pbr's.

That's what I was thinking.

The Zimmerman's weren't a waste of $$....as they were only $3 more apiece than standard ATE rotors. My dad has had them on his SD for years with no issues, and tremendous stopping power. They rock!

I got a full set of them for our W124 as well, front and rear.

I will just use the Mintex Pads....we'll see how they perform.

Those ATE rotors are a better choice IMO. I have run those and the Zim's. The Zim's will eventually crack. It doesn't take long.

I have also ran both of the pads you speak of. Personally I like the Mintex better than the PBR's. I had a hell of a time keeping those particular PBR's from squealing. IE: having to pull the pads every couple months and re-lube the backs of the pads to stop it. Major PITA... I even tried Permatex Brake Quiet. The only thing that worked was ATE's platilube.

The Zimmerman's on my dad's SD have been on for almost 3 years/30,000+ miles and they show virtually no wear, and they stop amazingly. I'm willing to give them a try...especially considering I got them for about $46 each.

His previous set of Balo rotors up front warped after like 4,000 miles....total junk.

My car had a set of ATE rear rotors warp after less than a year...so I had to replace them again, I used Brembo and they've been ok for the last 4+ years.

I just went through this on 2 different cars. Warped the Brembo's in 1 month. The Zimmerman's cracked on one the Volvo after 3 months. They cracked on my Passat (sold) after 10 months.

Went to ATE's "Premium One" rotors and had no problems with either.

You need to watch the Brembo's. The new ones are total crap. Made in China. It is stamped on the rotors edge and on the box.

Yeah I don't buy Balo or Brembo anymore.....and I am leery of ATE's "standard" ones as well. The brembo's I put on the rear of my SD were still made in Germany. I'd never put chinese parts on my car.

The "Premium One" rotors are what I have on there currently....if the Zimmerman's happen to fail....then I'll go back to those.

The brake pads that my indy put on my car were real squealers. After 100 miles of him doing the brake job, brake pads starting squealing something awful – I took the car back to him and he replaced the squealers with another set of the same brand. Within a couple of hundred miles, the squealing retuned with a vengeance. Guys, I don’t mean just a peep or a squeak – I dreaded EVERY stop; it was a loooong, screeching, soul-tearing squeal. After I took them off to replace them, I was so happy they were off my car that I didn’t really pay attention to the brand; I couldn’t throw them in the trash fast enough. They were either Textar or Mintex?
I put on a set of “PBR Advanced Technology Ceramics” and I have to say that I am very impressed with these pads. It is a complete and total joy to drive my Mercedes again. Pads are very quiet, not a peep out of them. They give out a minimal amount of brake-pad dust; the dust that it does put out is not graphite-black like my old pads - it’s more like a light grey and lots easier to clean up.
Anyways, this has been my experience with the PBR’s.

Drat, now I have to pick between them!

I was questioning if the "PBR Advanced Technology Ceramics" were any good....vs. Mintex.....well...I only have Mintex for our W124.....so I'll put those on and see how they do for a week before I do my car....then I can choose easier.

Don't worry too much about it. Just pick one and go for it. In regards to the pads use lots of plastilube or brake quiet on the backs of the pads and where the metal on the pads contacts the caliper on any surface and they should be fine.

I had Zimmermans on the SDL because they looked freaken awsome, with the stock wheels they are very pointless though since you can't see them.

I used Textar or OE pads. They are dusty, but sure bite. I was more interesting in performance than maintenance so I just kept the wheels waxed and sprayed them down with quick detail a few times a week.

One thing I noticed about the sloted ATE's is that they shed water really fast if you go through a deep puddle. I think the slots scrape the water off the pads or something, you almost never get that wet brake feel for more than a few seconds.

The ATE slotted are fantastic when they are new and have slots, you can't go wrong.
