Back in the diesel game - 1984 300SD

Well I have been looking for a diesel to get me to and from work and taking my son to school. I want to keep the miles down on the e420, so.....I purchased a cosmetically challenged (dented passenger side rear and drivers side front, bad clear coat peeling on all top surfaces) 1984 300SD. R-12 AC still works, but has some vent problems. I paid $1000. Odometer not working reads 150k. Carfax reports mileage as 140k in 2004. Couple says it wasn't used much in the last couple of years. I really only had $1000 to spend, so I hope the adage that the most expensive benz is a cheap benz does not hold true. Leaving for work now....just wanted to share....will post some pics later.

Quite honestly I think you'll end up spending some money on repairs, especially if the car wasn't driven in years. My SD was bought for a little less than 1000 and I have spent well over 2000 getting it running well (and still needs a bit more). Don't forget it is a 25 year old luxury car being purchased for nearly 1/100 of its original value. Sorry to be a downer, but just be verrryyyy careful with it.

Yeah, you'll probably have some repairs coming up. There's nothing more expensive than a cheap MB. Unless it was real well taken care of and you got a deal.

I think the car was driven regularly, but I have no way of knowing how frequently. It is a second car, and part of the reason for purchasing was so that I don't need to take my ONLY car to the shop to get things fixed right away. This will allow me time to work on either car when things come up.

The PO said that her mom's boyfriend was a MBZ diesel nut and maintained the car for her, but the boyfriend and mom split up, so there is now no one to maintain it. It looks like it has some new parts....radiator for sure. There are no leaks. No slippage in the tranny, but shift points seem a little high. It does have a pretty severe lack of power before 2000 rpm's. Linkage is good...right to the pin on the IP....I'm going to check the banjo bolt on the manifold....alda is untouched.

I understand the common wisdom about these purchases, but it starts right up.....no smoke....tranny shifts firm.....ac works....all windows and sunroof operating correctly...Not a spot of rust. I'm a gambler by nature....We'll see how it pans out. Thanks for the votes of confidence

My SD was under $1000. It runs like rust and gets everyone around.

I recently bought 2 calipers, 4 rotors and a PS belt. Other than that??? A few things have needed attention but I have been able to fix it all without replacing parts. I just use stuff I have on hand. Today I fixed the rattling air cleaner case... Used bits of rubber fuel line and some random hardware laying around to fix the broken mounts.

I would expect to pay 3-4k for a really nice SD. This one is reliable and has character.

Well I have a few problems as you veterans so astutely predicted.

Car wouldn't start.

Autozone charged and checked battery=good
Thought hack radio install by PO was the cause of battery drain so I removed radio fuse.

Sat overnight with battery connected and started this morning soooo... back to autozone to

Have them test starter and alternator today=battery bad, starter good, alternator diodes good, voltage (?) bad

So something is draining battery or alternator isn't charging=checked voltage regulator and it looks warn....will replace

______________________________________________________

Next isue: SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 0-60=23 seconds; 0-20 is the real problem.

Was hoping for plugged banjo, but minor soot only...cleaned but no help....changed fuel filters=no help. Will get valves adjusted and timing checked next??? Then maybe the ALDA.

______________________________________________________

Needs shifter bushings bad.
Needs Seat repair BAD.
Needs tires
needs shocks

The list is mounting and haven't even gotten to the suspension, or the paint and body work.

My goal was to be under $3000 for purchase price, repairs, and paint and bodywork, but I'm starting to think it can't happen.

I'm a little embarrassed to post , but I think it will be good for others to possibly see my mistake.

I'm not giving up yet....will update progress as it happens.

Questions-----battery is at 12.3 sitting, idle with many accesories on is at just under 12, volts climb as I give throttle up to ~13.3.
doesn't this mean my alternator is charging?

For your slowness, tune your transmission. Take a look at the Bowden cable and tighten it so there is no slack. I improved my 0-60 times by about 3-4 seconds by tuning the transmission correctly. You are correct about the ALDA as well, that will help with off-the-line acceleration.

Advance your turbo boost 3/4 of a turn, that will help drastically in how the throttle responds to pressure, and how the car accelerates.

People who claim; "there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes," have never bought one new. I have, and it is a he## of a lot of money let me tell ya. The most money I've ever spent on any car is the new price. Which does not come back to you either. Bottom line; buy what you can afford, and be happy with it.

What is true is, that you'd better know something about the car you are buying, to know what it's true estimated cost will be to put and keep it on the road. The rest, are just repeating a mindless slogan, on something they know nothing about. A cheap used Mercedes may be the best money you ever spent on a car - I know that side of the coin too.....I bought one of those too.

How is this done?
Or are you referring to the ALDA?

I think he means adjusting the wastegate to set turbo to proper spec, which if I recall correctly is ~13 PSI, but I really want to rule out the throttle linkage problem that I think I have.

Started another thread on throttle linkage.

The radio fuse being disconnected has stopped the battery drain, so I will replace the voltage regulator, and then I'll have to probably pay someone to figure out the problem with the radio wiring.

Voltage regulator replaced, but still trying to sort out the low power issue. I broke the line from the manifold to the overboost valve at the manifold when double checking it for soot build-up....banjo bolt is ok. Phil doesn't have the line...says it is a dealer only part.....egr and arv plugged at the rubber elbows....egr not stuck open when checked with vaccum pump....will update as I get things done....am really tempted to pay for a mechanic on this one....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

On my '83 that line is just hard plastic, I have replaced it. On my '84 it's like yours, a banjo bolt. Maybe you can affix a line on there until you get the proper set up.

How do you adjust the wastegate?

Good luck with staying on your budget especially with bodywork involved.
I was able to get a seat at the JY.
Tiers and shocks are necessities.
Depending on which transmission shifter bearings you're referring to, I've replaced the one under the car, cheap.
Adjust the ALDA, mark where it is now, you can always put it back.

My SD is a daily driver/beater. I did locate and install a different drivers seat, resoldered the CCU (works now) and adjusted the ALDA, (more seat of the pants on take off, seeing as how it starts in first gear now) it feels like a different car and I enjoy it quite a bit more than before I got it sorted out.
