check your hood pads guys!

the wife called last week to tell me she had lost power steering. right away i figured that i must have caught the front seal on the pump when installing it. (although i hadnt seen any fluid in the driveway) the hood pad had been hanging down a tiny bit for the last year(when i say a little bit i mean the first 3 or so inches) well when i got there i found the hood pad wrapped around the pulley and the belt off of the pulley. luckily no damage was done.

Wow....weird occurrence!

But thanks to the design of the belts, it did not strand the vehicle!

If it were a serpentine SDL....things probably would not have gone so well.....

My current hoodpad is the bane of my existence. It is crumbling and falling into all sorts of places that were once spic and span. I am looking into after market replacement material....

My 84 was originally in Texas, then in Atlanta. Now in PA. It came to me without the hood pad and I assumed it was taken out to let the heat escape a little better. I have not intalled one and have not had any problems. I suppose it would be a little quieter with a hood pad but other than that I have not seen any reason to install one. Am I missing something?

The hood pad does not really let heat escape, but is does help a bit w/noise, and helps hold residual heat on winter nights.

It also saves the clear coat on your hood from engine heat.

Using only the MB tool kit's 13 mm open end wrench and the lug wrench the serpentine belt can be reinstalled or replaced with a spare in about 10 min!

But that is assuming no damage to the tensioner from sucking in a hood pad.

I second that. The dealership glue is the only way to go.
