How can I put this....it is unusual for a Benz to look like that, but if you happy.... just don't post any more pictures please.

Black smoke is unburned diesel fuel. AKA, wasted fuel. The most powerful engines will produce power from BURNED fuel. Take an E320 cdi for a spin, it puts down 220+ hp and over 400lbs of torque, and not a wisp of smoke.

Once you reach the point of black smoke, the engine power levels are falling, not rising. Optimum is right at the edge before it makes smoke.

I was hinting at this problem in my first post in this thread. A lot of people do mods to their car that scientifically dont work or defeat the purpose of their "upgrade". Examples include installing cold air intakes near an thats hot ie exhaust manifold. People who hop hondas are another example of people who "upgrades". Point is if you do modifications make sure you do your homework and make sure its gonna improve things not set you back.

This is quite interesting...I always kind of wanted to see a stack on one of our MBs so I guess here it is. A nice big chrome stack on the pillar would look nice, I can't imagine what a blind spot that thing gives you.

Black smoke is wasted fuel. All you are doing is decreasing the mileage and making a less-than-optimal burn in the cylinders. If you want more power, throw on a better turbo to take all that fuel you're spewing out the back and THEN you'll actually have more power when it burns clean.

Yes....but....it will rapidly raise the EGT to destructive levels.....and the engine is not a cross flow head...so air flow is limited.....the 617 is not a good motor for power boosting....the ideal motor for that is the 606.

Sorry I'm not enough of a purist, ... that was in a former part of my life, but I think it's funny and kind of cool (as long as it's not one of my cars).

Think what you want, it's all in fun.

Black smoke doesn't decrease power output, it just is a lack of efficient use of fuel. It is a "cheap" way to increase power and you'll pretty much see any drag, tractor-pull, etc. high-output race diesel putting out black smoke unless fuel efficiency is important (example of the efficiency is the Audi Tdi race cars).

No big, burn what you want, looked cleaner than lots of pickups I see and 1/3 the displacement. Quieter also.

i wasn't going to post anything but...there are so many people upset at you, i'm starting to feel bad.

it's your car, it's your choice, i say keep it up. looks kind of cool, mechanics/physics aside.

and the redneck in me says black smoke's alright.

You really should rig a little flap to keep the water out. Plus it'll flap when you mash the fuel pedal, would be kinda cute. That one has definite eligibility as a pickup conversion!

Ok, I'll admit I do like the stack. I can't help it, but it needs the flapper to keep water and crud out.

Add a flapper!

Now you've got me thinking of how much fun it would be to take a rear-hit TD and convert it to a "benzamino", ... with dual stacks at the front of the bed.

Not within my skill-set, but would be a blast.
