I did finally manage to get the hatch open, I ended up doing kinda what you had to do, basically fiddling with the linkage through the handle hole until I got the door plunger to pop back up.

Awesome! I'm glad you got it. I'm pretty sure I had something big and awkward back there the first time it happened to me. I also could not physically move the plunger from inside the car. It felt like something else was going to break.
