Great !
I think it might take me longer.. but what I am going to do is get someone to help me on the weekend who's a mechanic. That way I will know what's going on! And I will probably chat with a neighbour as well. |

Running like a new car
Hey everyone... thanks for all the suggestions.
Just did the valves (without the special wrenches ) and all the exhaust were tight and a couple of the intake. Once that was done the car started in a second and drives like the day it was made! I'm pretty happy. So glowplugs, oil and valves totally sorted out this car. jw |

Glad it turned out to be a relatively simple fix. Thanks for telling us how it turned out.

I recommend a quick clearance check in about five thousand miles. There may have been some carbon buildup on the valve and valve seats that will get pounded off.
If so your actual present clearances might decline on some valves. This is based on them being never touched for five years. Especially of the past owner drove quite a lot in that time period. After that every fifteen thousand miles should be followed reasonably religiously. The old gas model mercedes six cylinders where every ten thousand miles and you risked a burnt exhaust valve if you neglected it. On those cars it was more unstable adjusters than actual wear. Problem was reduced about 1970 or maybe a little earlier. |

By the way, no need to check all the glowplugs on loop style plugs if one is working. If one loop plug fails, they all fail. so if one is working they are all working. That's one big advantage to pencil plugs. If one fails, it doesn't stop the others from working.

Hey everyone since I had so many helpful repsonses and the car is running great now I thought I'd ask about another thing here first. I probably need to post a new thread but I didn't know if you'd all see that one... so anyways the fuse for my instrument cluster shorted the other night. I replaced it and it shorted again right away. I watched the electricity zap it while I turned the headlights on. Anyone have this happen at all ? I will post this under a new thread too - 1976 240D Istrument Cluster Fuse Shorting ..

Oil Change
Oh yes and one more thing.... regarding the oil switch. I think the 5w40 is too thin for my engine. Since I added that I've noticed its been blowing some blue smoke so I think the thicker non synthetic oil was a bit better for the old engine.. didn't slip past the seals or whatever is causing the smoke.
I am going to switch to 15w40 non synthetic I think as it was previously running in the recommended 10w30. |
