Engine Swap Question
I'm about to put my 84 617.951 (300SD) engine and 83 240D 4 speed into my 79 240D chassis. (I pulled it out of my 83 240D chassis) I was considering pulling the 79 4 speed tranny and bolting it to he 84 engine so that I wouldn't have to mess with the shifter, but it appears a little shorter. Does anyone know if I will have to pull the whole shifter, or, will I only need to change out the rods?
The 79 is the one with all the levers pointing up, but you probably know that already. Thanks in advance.

installing the 5cyl engine means the transmission is going to sit further back in the car. thus the drive shaft must be shorter, and the shift linkages must be shorter, and the transmission support cross member must be modified to sit further back.
to use the newer transmission you would need to use slightly longer linkages... you should have enough length in the linkage to modify them to make them work with the transmission. Adding the 5cyl engine means you have crossed the line from a simple bolt in project to a project that requires some fabrication. its been documented many times on this forum, so it should be a fun project. search "manual swap" and you will find many threads on the topic.

Either transmission will work. which ever one you use, you will still have to shorten the shift rods.
Use a transmission X member from a 240D automatic. do not try to modify the the 240D X mount. Use the 240D front section of the drive line and have it shortened and balanced. I would use the 79 transmission, then use the clutch, slave, master and throw out bearing you are already using. measure both transmissions, but Iam sure they are both the same length. Did you have the manual FW match balanced to the auto FW? Charlie

I'm pulling the engine and tranny (617 and 4 speed tranny), as well as the drive shaft and rear end along with the axles out of a 83 240D. The 79 had the original engine and 4 speed tranny in it, which I have pulled.
My thoughts are that if I pull everything out of the 83 it should, for the most part bolt right into the 79. The shift rods in the 79 are quite a bit longer, and the linkage on the 79 tranny are further forward - see photo's above. I measured the tranny and the 83 appears to be a little longer ~ 1 inch. I want to do whatever is easiest. If leaving the 83 tranny bolted to the 84 617 means I don't have to change the driveshaft that is the way to go. If I can use the 79 tranny and not have to change anything but the linkage I would use it, since I have to change the linkage anyway. Why would you use the 79 tranny, just curious... Quote:

I just pulled the shifter out of the 83 and the rods have been modified, so, I'm going to leave the 83 tranny on. The original question was - is there a difference in the actual shifters? I'm assuming I can put the rods out of the 83 on the 79 shifter since the actual shift patterns are the same.

I don't know for sure, but I would assume they are the same. You could pull both out and compare them.

Yeah, that's a step I would prefer to avoid. I'm gonna trust that they are unless I hear otherwise.
Thanks all.

Maybe Iam getting your cars, transmissions and engines mixed up here.
Your 83 already had the 617 and 4 spd in it and was a driver, so all the driveline work was already done. So the shiftrods whould just swap over to the 79. I believe the shifters are the same. under the shifter, there is a hole in each shift lever at the top. place a rod through the holes. this lines up the levers. then attach the shift rods to the levers and the transmission. just be sure the trans levers are in neutral. which transmission X mount are you using? I'm not sure what mount it is. I'll try and get a photo posted. For some reason my computer is refusing to read my camera card at the moment. I'm going to climb under the 79 this morning and see if the mount will bolt onto the 79 the way it came off the 83. I'll also put the rods off the 83 onto the 79 shifter.

your 79 & 83 are the same body, so should mount the same.
In this thread, here is a picture of a 240D mount that was modified to fit. ( scroll down torwards the bottom for the pic) this could cause some problems. 240D 4-speed manual swap in 300CD this post will show the different type of mounts. the top right is the 240D auto mount. Here's a photo of the mount out of the 83. And yes, the 83 is a 240D which had the 617 and 4 speed tranny already in it.

That is the correct one
I just got one from Pic a Part from a 240D automatic and it is exactly what is needed for the converting a W123 to a 617 and 4 speed. It will line up perfect.

Got the rear, axles and driveshaft on today. Completed the modification of the 79 to take the 83 throttle linkage, which was fun. Waiting for the oil filter housing and some other parts. Hope to get it back together early next week.
