Non-diesel (though it did smoke alot). 351? Mercury Monterrey. The year was 1981. Some lady ran a fourway stop and smacked the front end of my car. I got out to see if she was ok; she backed up with a stunned look on her face; and drove away. Police made a report. heh lotta good that does.

Anyway, I limped my car over to my job and parked it near the bldg. Popped the hood to look at the damage. Had left the car running. Something must have been wrong with the trans linkage cause it jumped into gear, nearly ran me over and then rammed into the building. Put a nice V shaped wedge in the front of the car. Total loss. Left an interesting scar on the bldg that is there to this day.

Working on an MCI bus once. I managed to put myself in the hospital for two issues.

1. The typical smashed finger, ran the empty 200 gallon fuel tank on a pallet jack into the thumb against the side of the bus breaking it and ripping it up.

2. Needed to get the job done and the bus out of there so continued to work (like we all do cause we are idiots) and was cutting 4 inch hole with a corded drill.
Cause of my thumb, I lost control of the drill at high speed and it swung around so hard that the brought the cord whipping up at about mach five.

Where did it land? smacked me right in the nuts on one side so hard with the cord end that I turned white and passed out lying on the floor. The foreman drove me to the hospital. I don't think I have ever been in so much pain before or after that experience.

Afterwords, I went out and bought a cordless drill to use from then on.

I need to knock on wood on this one - youthful real stupid life threatening thing: driving my newly purchased '66 Porsche 912 home from LA, I was in a freezing cold parking lot in PA about 16hrs from home, it would only start if i jumped the solenoid, i jacked it up (using a large floor jack - i had no jack stands) and turned on the ignition and jumped the starter, it certainly started, but i had left it in gear! the one rear tire that was on the ground was slipping on some ice - i think - saving me from the car jumping off the jack. i turned the car off and was a bit lightheaded after realizing that i almost bit it. I never ever get under a car without jack stands and triple checking that it's safe. second non-life threatening thing, decided to leave the garage door about halfway down, was only doing some quick things, however, i was rushing and turned to go into the garage and put a major gash in my forehead. try explaining that one in a dignified way.

Turbo Drain Sprain

Was replacing the notoriously leaky turbo drain return gaskets on a w123 and had the car up on lift. Had the pan off and sinc I could not get the drain off the pan pulling up decided to get a screw driver in whole leading to the pan. Pushed up with lots of forced, screwdriver slipped and thmb jammed up into nicely machine whole edge taking of a good chunk of the top of my thumb along with thumb nail, jammed my thumb. Man was that a bloody greasy mess , and it amazingly healed ok. Of course managed to clean it and bandage it up to finish teh job same day.

During the fall I was removing the fuel screen on my SD. The socket slipped off the nut and my hand went flying into the bottom of the trunk. the pain was so bad I had to lay down in the driveway till I stoped seeing stars. Also one time I was working on the sd and the socket wrench slipped off a bolt and hit me right in my mouth. I swear I must have brusied my tooth or somthing becuase it hurt for like a month.

the worst pain I ever had was the pain from a kidney stone. it was like somebody kept on stabbing me over and over in my lower back. I actually cried from the pain and I normal don't cry from pain at all.

bah, you're a wimp.
I've had two kidney stones, (both around Christmas...) and I actually drove myself to the hospital for the last one. (around midnight on Christmas Eve...)
the worst thing about the stones was that massive watering of the mouth before the forced vomit... every 15 minutes or so. the pain felt like someone had stabbed a HUGE knife in my side and was continuously twisting it...

I can't stop laughing at the bruised tooth...hilarious had actual tears from laughing so hard, not sure, I think maybe the guy that hit himself in the nuts primed it. laugh therapy every time I read it.

I can't even remember all the work injuries over more than 35 years.

* Automotive fluids sprayed, dumped, dripped, and scalded to varying degrees over every inch of my body at one time or another.

* Spud wrench punched through my hand (dropped by a co-worker).
* Leg hairline fracture from an engine hoist hydraulic cylinder blowout.
* Concussion from a car hoist blowing a hydraulic line and dropping onto the stop lock.
* Several fingers have been run through V belt pulleys thanks to a co-workers failure to think...
* Hospital visit to remove wire wheel bristles punched deep in my face, arm, chest, and leg, thanks to a co-worker installing a coarse low speed wheel on a high speed motor.
* Screwdriver through hand, arm, and leg, (several by a co-worker).
* Hospital visit to sew up a Skill saw cut into the edge of right hand, wrist to first knuckle down to bone.
* Drill chuck key half way through hand, bounced off bone.
* Three ton chain hoist broke off the overhead tram, landed on my chest cracking ribs.
* Car fell on my foot when the jack stand punched through a bad Unibody sub-frame.
* Smashed between manual trans truck and my toolbox by a co-worker that cranked it in gear...
* Blind for three days, flash burn from welding with a damaged shield..
* Pocket screwdriver through the cheek, it fell into a running engine and came out like a dart.
* Mashed fingers to many ways.
* Ripped a fingernail off three times.
* Paralysis from mid back down due to working upside down (driver/passenger dash) for hours, co-workers had to remove me from the vehicle to recover (painful).
* Wrenched my back catching a naked v8 block before it could decapitate a co-worker.
* High power ignition spark burned through thumbnail to bone.
* Many welding slag burns, deep enough that I use forceps to reach in and rip it out before it starts to hurt (doctor keeps me stocked with burn treatment).
* Passed-out due to a co-workers failure to connect the exhaust vent.
* Knocked 30 feet by a drunk crane operator, cracked ribs + both legs hairline fracture.

Wow, THAT is quite a list. You are fortunate to have survived! I also see a consistent mention of coworkers--maybe you'd be better off working solo--except how would you get out of a vehicle when your back goes out.

Some of your mishaps made me laugh becuase I've have had similar ones that were "non-incidents" because of maybe an inch differnce in location.

When I was about 12, my father caught me holding something in my hand as I used a screwdriver on it, and warned me of the danger of putting the screwdriver thru my hand. Well said, I understood. Then, a week later he comes up from the shop with a BIG screwdriver stuck thru his hand on his way to the bathroom to clean it up and fix. Show and tell.

I was working on a printing press to diagnose a problem and my thumb slipped and went through a gap between a rotating cam and staionary shaft about this big | | , my thumb was this big |........| before. After the incident I grab a shop rag and wrapped it up, fixed the problem and went to the clinic. I ripped the thumb nail off, split it open and fratured the tip. I needed 8 stitches and lost the nail, it lost some feeling as well. Thye most painful part was when they soaked my hand in ice water, I almost passed out.

Our rule is never put your finger where you would put your Willie Nelson.

I was welding once and not wearing gloves, but a wedding ring...using a MIG with flux core wire. a piece of slag landed on the ring and, let me tell you, gold is an excellent conductor it gave me a 2nd degree burn and hurt like a bastard.

Most of these injuries happened when I was young and dumb.

I was cutting a 4" PVC pipe hanging vertically, I was in an awkward position and using a hack saw. Instead of cutting it completely I decided to break it off...bad idea. When the pipe broke it hit me sqaure on the face and broke my front tooth. The owners of the company happended to be right there and asked if I was ok, I said yes and told them I guess I'm pretty tough and can take a punch...I felt like Billybob for a few days.

I am older and much wiser now and I try to teach others about my past experiences, some will never learn.

Sounds like newer lifts and smarter co workers are in order here.

A few made me cringe and get that tingly feeling !! OUCH!!!

Down here in south Texas Ive learned gauze and electrical tape are my best friends. Patches the holes until you get to the professionals !!

But we keep on wrenching ! For the love and pleasure of it !!??

Changing the oil while real hot into 2 of 2 gal bleach containers I had cut down ,I felt confident I had it in the bag.At just the right time a gust of wind blew the container out of the way as a removed the nut ,of coarse then I tried to replace the nut.All at a lonely service station along some small town off route Hell .It was amazing to see later that I had no burns just a bruised Ego.I think a bus of church people was pulling up as the cus words were flying.
