Smile What's a W114?

Alright, stupid-new-guy question #2 from me in the past 24 hours... what's a 220D considered (it's a 1971, if that matters)? I see all the references to W114/115, 124, etc... and just wondered if that was a frame/chassis reference, model reference, etc...

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Look at the first three NUMBERS of the VIN. In the case of an MB, those numbers will indicate the series as we refer to them here.

Have a great day,

Thanks!

Oh, now why didn't *I* think of that???

So a '71 w/a vin that starts 115.110 is a W115?

Is that related to a W114 & or a W116 then? Is there some sort of reference chart that will indicate whether parts are interchangeable between these "W" numbers? I see many parts classifieds listing, for instance, W114 parts. How can I tell whether they'll fit my W115?

Thanks for the info; it sure makes more sense now!

Chris

MB part numbers for your car will begin with those numbers as the first three digits of the part number.

The 114 and 115 are strikingly similar. You probably couldn't tell them apart. Many parts are interchangable, but do check with experts.

Chassis parts will generally start with 115, but don't be surprised to see parts from other models (e.g., 110, 108, 114) because of model year overlap and, of course, replaced parts.

Engine parts will generally start with the engine number which is something like 615 in your 220D.

The W114 & W115 is the same chassis!! The W114 chassis had a higher level of trim & only used 6cly GAS engines. The only exception was the W115.114 (300D) and it was really a W114 chassis by the trim level that it had. But because it was a DIESEL it started 115.

Chris:

Parts will be listed in the catalog at the parts supplier by chassis number (aka VIN number -- although the MB chassis number isn't really a VIN number...... they were changed later to match US requirements).

This means that for quite a few parts, you will need the entire number -- 115.110.xxxxxxxxx with the xxxxxxx being the actual serial number of the car. MB changes things when they need to be changed and doesn't differentiate by model year -- the 115 in various forms was produced from 1968 to 1977, in two major styles (the non-basher bumper and the basher bumper) -- a 1971 would be the earlier one.

You can take a door of a 1977 W115 and hang it on a 1968 and it will fit perfectly, but the fenders are different because of the 5 mph basher bumper on the later ones. Seat are interchangeable with the W123 chassis, some parts (especially engine parts) are from much earlier models.

Great cars except for the rust!

I wouldn't expect many parts from a W116 to fit -- that is the big sedan/sport coupe (350 and 450 SE, SEL, SEC, SL, and SLC). Big V8 engines, bigger seats, etc. Made from 1972 to 1982, I think.

Peter
