I know there's probably no way of getting this answered but I'm going to ask anyway... Is there a way to check if the chain was replaced during the car's life? I bought the car from the original owner's daughter. She didn't know much about the car. I believe her father is not around anymore. So I can't ask the PO.

No.
There is no way to verify without impeccable records.

Thanks Roy and vstech, a new timing chain WILL "re-time" the IP?

Well, assuming the IP has not been "timed" since the chain was last replaced or new, then installing a new chain will correct the IP timing to when the previous chain was new. If that makes sense.

At least, that is how I understand it.

^ If that's the case, why doesn't an offset Woodruff key, if precise, do the same thing?

Chain slop is not corrected by an offset Woodruff key..

A worn chain has a larger link center to center dimension = it is wearing the sprockets to match.

What is damaged by a worn out timing chain?

Crankshaft gear
MB# 617 052 00 03
$228.00

Camshaft gear
MB# 121 052 03 01
$252.00

sprocket gear
MB# 621 050 04 09
$127.00

Timing device
MB# 617 070 05 45
$615.00

Damage cost TOTAL $1,222.00
+ Labor

What is the serviceable life of a timing chain ? I finally got my hands on the complete maint records for my 85 300Sd ( it was my Dad's since new) Apparently it was replaced 154,234 miles and the car now has 199,950. on it.
I am going to post a few other items that appear to have been replaced quite frequently and so I am curious about them.

Thanks.

I'll add my "is there a certain stretch degree that would tell me to replace the chain?

And will that (thanks Beastie) get the fuel back to correct timing also?

NO.

Between 200-250K miles I replace the timing chain = don't waste time checking it..

If the timing has not been changed since new = it should be back where it belongs.

hmm. the question this answers was, is there a stretch that says to replace the chain?
are you answering that no matter what the chain stretch is, replace the chain? or are you saying that it's pointless to check the injection timing, just change the chain, and the injection timing is ok?

with frequent oil changes, and synthetic oil, chain wear is drastically reduced, and could last much longer than 250K, so I'd think inspecting the cam timing marks would be good to see if a chain is needed.
also, some motors, like the one discussed above, need chain replacement sooner than 200K, again, oil type and change frequency would cause the failure, and measuring the stretch with the timing marks would tell this.
Yes?
