think of it this way. (no offense to the crutch explanation) when the chain begins to wear, cam (and by relation, injection pump)timing is retarded, as the chain wears, it minutely damages the gears as well. installing an offset key corrects the cam timing, but not the injection pump timing, AND the worn links continue to wear the gears.
a new chain solves BOTH the cam timing, and the injection pump timing, and it puts NEW surfaces on the gears slowing the wear!

Thanks Roy and vstech, a new timing chain WILL "re-time" the IP?

Well, assuming the IP has not been "timed" since the chain was last replaced or new, then installing a new chain will correct the IP timing to when the previous chain was new. If that makes sense. At least, that is how I understand it.

^ If that's the case, why doesn't an offset Woodruff key, if precise, do the same thing?

A worn chain has a larger link center to center dimension = it is wearing the sprockets to match. What is damaged by a worn out timing chain? What is the serviceable life of a timing chain ? I finally got my hands on the complete maint records for my 85 300Sd ( it was my Dad's since new) Apparently it was replaced 154,234 miles and the car now has 199,950. on it.
I am going to post a few other items that appear to have been replaced quite frequently and so I am curious about them. Alan

I'll add my "is there a certain stretch degree that would tell me to replace the chain? And will that (thanks Beastie) get the fuel back to correct timing also?

Between 200-250K miles I replace the timing chain = don't waste time checking it.. If the timing has not been changed since new = it should be back where it belongs. |

Thank you for being succinct.

are you answering that no matter what the chain stretch is, replace the chain? or are you saying that it's pointless to check the injection timing, just change the chain, and the injection timing is ok? with frequent oil changes, and synthetic oil, chain wear is drastically reduced, and could last much longer than 250K, so I'd think inspecting the cam timing marks would be good to see if a chain is needed. also, some motors, like the one discussed above, need chain replacement sooner than 200K, again, oil type and change frequency would cause the failure, and measuring the stretch with the timing marks would tell this. Yes? ![]()

Stretch answer
Quote:
Example is a retired W123 Euro police cruiser (Ohio owner). * 113,000 total miles, (unknown hours idling). * Lack of power/performance + poor MPG. * Timing showed four degrees stretch/wear. * Replaced the timing chain = perfect timing + great power. If the engine has 200k +, and no records = I replace the timing chain, don't waste time checking it.. |
