oil return tube question
I just ordered oil cooler lines for my 81 SD so I will change them when I change my oil and I have new seals for the turbo oil return line (the big line that goes to the top of the pan). What worries me a touch is the two bolts at the top looks like they would be easy to break and that would mean a lot of disasembly to drill for an easy out ,has anyone ever changed these seals. there's a top gasket two O rings and a bottom seal.....thanks...

William - When I replaced the seals/o-rings on the oil return tube I took the intake manifold, exhaust manifold and turbo off and gave everything a good cleaning. I did not have any problems removing those bolts. I was told that you can replace the o-rings without taking all that stuff off but I wanted to clean everything up. Also, I just had the "rubber" hose section replaced on both of the oil cooler lines for the 240D at a local hose rebuild shop and it was $88 total.

Just finished changing the seal on the turbo drain pipe on my 83sd. If you remove the turbo you don't have to remove those small bolts on the drain pipe it just slides off the bottom pipe. Get the o rings for the pipe you will need to replace them also while you down there replace the o rings on the air clearner drain back tube. take care not to bend the pipe in the pan when removing it . Some of the rubber from the seal can get stuck in the top of the pan and wedge the pipe from coming out. Take a small screwdriver and remove any old rubber thats holding the pipe from coming out. Then it should just come out. It took me about 2 hours to do the job. Good luck BILL

There is a steel gasket between the turbo and the manifold so chances are if you are carefull it will be ok to use again. Steps are remove air cleaner remove mounting for air cleaner remove oil line to turbo(carefull with gasket on turbo) loosen up exhaust pipe at flex at turbo also remove bracket nuts ( atached to manifold) to free up exhaust pipe so you can move out of the way to get turbo off. then remove 4 bolts that hold turbo on manifold. change seal and orings and put it back together. have fun Bill
