617.952 Hot Rod

This is interesting, a 617.952 used in a modified Sreet Rod. the frame looks sort of light duty, and the rear section looks like a weak point.

Not something the average Construction worker or Farmer is going to pounding out in the fields.

Now RLEO or LEATHERMANG might look pretty cool driving around the Ranch in it.

You know, the more I look into it, the more "other" applications I see the 617 being adapted to. Lots of rock crawler and off roaders love these motors and put them in their rigs, even Toyotas. It's so damn bullet proof even the legendary 22r doesn't hold a candle to it.

The 18RC was much more rugged than the 22R or the 22RU.

Oooooh...shiny!

Not my thing but pretty cool to see what's powering it.

I'd love a 617 powered rat-rodded 30's vintage pickup.

I bought a used 74 toyota PU, in the dark (knew better), thing had a miss and a noise from the clutch area. needed something fast and the price was right after getting my 67 VW totaled.

HMMM. I bought the 85 300D in the dark, something about the dark. they all look good in the dark. it`s the next morning they don`t always look so good.

It had the 18RC engine. did a compression test, burnt valves in one cyl. got head rebuilt and but another 18k on it. the darn thing would keep getting out of time. as I remember it had an adjustment on the side of the distributor. always had to mess with it.

The clutch problem was bearings in the transmission.

After I traded it off for the 82 Datsun PU, I went back to the dealer for the other key and some papers. the guy said they were having some problem with a miss in the engine. I don`t know your problem now.

All I remember is, that 18RC eng was a POS. except for the timing problem, it ran good.

The small Toyota engine to have is the 1.8l 3t engine. Pushrod engine, and pretty decent power for what it is and for the fuel it uses. I had one in an 81 Corolla SR5 hardtop, didn't learn how rare that car was until after I sold it (for 10x what I paid for it), but it sure was a fun little car.

My tercel has the little 3A in it. The A series engine powered everything from the ceapo cars like the tercel up to the super charged DOHC engine in the MR2. Mine is the cheapo engine. My dad bout an 85 tercel that was totaled from a friend for $100 when I was 10yo. he put the engine in the barn. at age 18 I blew up the engine in the tercel, so I got the engine out of the barn. That car got stolen at age 23. I bought a junker off CL for $80 then got a call from CHP they found my stolen car. Paid the impound fee $270 got the car back and pulled the engine and put it in the $80 car. I'm now 27 and still have the dang car, with the same engine. Last tune up the compression was 155 psi on all cylinders. perfect to factory specs.

Its no 617, but its a damn reliable engine!!!

I've always wanted to build a hot rod with a 617. its purely mechanical nature just screams hot rod to me.

Looks like a Jag with the in-board discs.
