I also suggested a remote starter switch until the new NSS can be installed.

Excellent! So it's more like a GM setup than a Ford.

THANKS ROY !!!!!
120 miles back to Wall? If you were around Philly I would have been happy to help but Wall is a ways away (I actually bought my 300SD there from a member at the MMC airport) I am glad you were able to make it back but if you were out a bit West here I wish I had known!

I was thinking a little bit more about this problem and was thinking if you were to do this trick with a manual gearbox (say for this case the ignition switch wasn't working as there isn't a safety cut out switch) and you left the car in gear you'd probably at worst get a bruised shin if the car lurched forwards...

I'm picturing myself leaning into the front of the car in this case.

BUT if the cut out switch on an automatic transmission was working and you by pass it using this starter trick then you could end up in an embarrassing situation.

If you get the engine to start - the torque converter spins - creates hydraulic pressure and starts to drive the gearbox shafts. Depending on which gear is selected the car could try and drive off into the distance. If you are standing in front of it you might get caught between your car and that Chevy Suburban parked in front of you!

So I guess I'm saying - neat trick - but do your best to make sure the transmission is in park or at least in neutral and APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE! If not get someone or something to push down on the brake pedal just in case.

It is DANGEROUS to bypass the switch, except as an emergency operation.

Don't know about the W124 diesels, but bypassing the neutral-switch typically doesn't cause the starter to crank, but merely allows the key to cause the starter to crank. Hopefully by then, one would be inside the car in case it was in gear.
Now if you were underhood, with the ignition on, tranny in gear, and bypassed the neutral-switch connector's starter terminal to the hot feed for the backup light, that could be scary!
Good idea to keep the parking brake on in any case.

Happy Motoring, Mark
