A couple questions,
1) The w126 has an economy gauge next to the oil pressure, fuel level, and water temp. Can that cluster be put in the w123 instrument panel? I was thinking it would be cool to have an economy gauge. 2) Some w124's have exterior temp gauges, can these be easily modified to fit into the w123 cluster? Any ideas?

1- How do you plan on using the econ gauge in your diesel? They only came in gasser and used manifold vacuum to measure economy. I have seen them be adapted to work on turbodiesels to measure boost and I guess you could tap into the vacuum circuit for the tranny, thats the only circuit which has varying vacuum depending on throttle position. You can find a W123 cluster with a econ gauge.
2- yes it can be done, do a search.

Interesting, thanks for the reply.
I'll be more likely to do the temp gauge the the economy gauge.

I have a gasser cluster in my W124 diesel; I tapped into the transmission vacuum line and it works great for the economy gauge since the diesel creates a "simulated" manifold vacuum. I don't know if the 126 cluster will fit a 123 but you could always try with junkyard parts, wouldn't cost a lot.

No, a 126 cluster will not fit a 123 dash and vise-a-versa. The gauges are the same (mostly), depending on the year.
79Mercy has a point. If you want a boost gauge, buy one. Diesel engines do not "create" vacuum (no manifold, either), there is a gear driven mechanical vac pump to operate the various components, such as, the power brakes, door locks and HVAC. A coupe has a vac lead for the front seat back locks as well. If you take a lead off the VCV, you'll get a false reading. Which doesn't matter, as there is no such thing as an mpg gauge on a diesel. Use your right foot to determine that. I have no knowledge of how to connect an outside temp gauge. Newer 126's have this too.

Yes, a W124 exterior temp gauge will fit into the W123 cluster. Deliveryvalve did an excellent write up. beginning of this thread he used a W126 gauge and later stumbled onto the w124 unit which fits better and is smaller.

Let me correct myself, the tach/clock is the same unit, yet in a different housing, so you can't swap it from one cluster to the next. The rest of the gauges are not the same.
