Wild guess - from the turbo to a bolt coming off of the manifolds?
(Why the wild guess? I don't have a turbo on my OM617 but it reminds me of the manifold support bracket that runs from under the manifolds to a bolt that holds on the beautiful casting that connects to the engine mounts)

Brace
The longer brace goes diagonally down to the block. I don't have a picture showing the connection at the block and I no longer own the car but you should be able to figure it out from my picture. There's also a brace at the rear of the trap cat (where it connects to the exhaust manifold) as the second picture shows. The references to "test pipe" are because I removed the trap cat and temporarily replaced it with a bypass pipe for testing purposes only.
Here is the second picture, which I had attached to another forum thread. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/attachments/diesel-discussion/55641d1212446443-trap-cat-test-pipe-finished-1985-300d-ca-w123-om617-rear-brace.jpg Jeremy
