Source for rebuilt 722.4 transmission

What is the consensus on reputable sources for a 722.4 transmission rebuild?

Long story short, my 1992 300D that i have had for a year stopped moving forward today. This is about a month and a half after replacing the head gasket so the car has seen more than its fair share of downtime lately. I pulled the pan and found the a dumbbell sitting on top of the filter. I was hoping it wasn't too bad until i saw a broken part of the B2 Band sitting above the valve body plate.

This is about as far as i want to tear into the transmission myself and am now looking for a rebuilt or someplace to have my transmission rebuilt.

thanks for any recommendations,
todd

You didn`t say where you live, but this shop, Peter Schmit is highly recomended for doing MB transmissions.
They are in Burlingame, Ca. It`s a little south of San francisco, Ca.

These guys have a good reputation also, and are in Southern, Ca.

You can go the easy/low cost route (new b2 piston) or the expensive and difficult route (rebuilt transmission). Many DIYer's have replaced the b2 piston without removing the transmission from the car.

If you decide on a rebuilt, get a genuine MB rebuilt from Rusty at 1-800-741-5252 for about $1600. 2 year - 20,000 mile warranty, you won't be sorry. Find a local shop willing to install for a reasonable fee.

I live just west of Chicago, so anything local would be great. I'll be installing the transmission myself so if i need to get one shipped that is an option.

Maxbumpo, my original plan was to replace the B2 piston but it quickly turned into the expensive and difficult route after seeing the was B2 band broken.

Just out of curiosity, how many miles on the transmission? I've got 228,000 on mine (same car as yours) and am wondering how long it will go.

When the time comes, I would also go with Rusty. I think he charges 1600 for the tranny and 250 for shipping (shipping old core back to him is free).

FWIW, I got about 225k miles on my original transmission (apparently not well maintained) and about 350 on the first reman replacement. I just had another reman transmission/torque converter installed at about 575k miles.

Don't know about pricing, but I hear good feedback about Eriksson Industries transmissions.

Wow....that's really encouraging! I'm pretty sure mine at 228k has been well maintained (I've had it since 137K), so hopefully I have a ways to go.

Is engine rebuilt or original? My current debate is whether or not to replace vacuum pump preventatively. What have you seen in that regard? I hear horror stories....

I replaced the original engine with a used one at about 400k miles. The used engine died after another 150k miles so I installed a reman engine recently. Hopefully I'm good for a while now. I did have a vacuum pump disaster at about 300k miles, it did plenty of damage; now I replace them at any sign of noise.

Re the vacuum pump (and my apologies to the OP for the temporary thread hijack!), what kind of noise do you listen for? And so I assume, in your opinion, it's not necessary to replace them purely on the basis of mileage?

I lost the head gasket on my 300D/602 right at 176k miles. My transmission now gave up at 178k miles. Everything about the car leads me to believe it was well maintained and it had complete service records through 150k miles. With the exception of the broken B2 band the valve body looked great, nothing scorched or burnt up.

Has anyone had any experience with Adsit Company in Indiana? They are a little over an hour away from me, which saves me the hassle and cost of shipping.

I guess people have had good results with Adsitco and nothing but trouble.

I replaced the trans in the 85 I think it had 348,000 on it. bought the car with 176K. always serviced right on time. started acting like I had to push the car at hwy speeds to make it go, and started getting this roarring sound at around 2700 - 3100 rpm as I remember.

That is when I slipped in the 240D 4-spd.

I can't seem to remember if the '87 300d has the same transmission or not, I kinda doubt it. But if it did, I have a known good one in my garage and I am semi close to the OP.
