Do not know about WK 716; Pep Boys sold me the filter and the number came out of their computer.

Well, thanks to your insights both filters are installed. Here is a pic; don't the new fuel filters make it look better?
![]() Some observations: I filled the spin-on filter with new diesel fuel and installed it. Put the clear plastic in-line filter in dry. Pumped for about a minute and the in-line filter filled up. Took nearly ten minutes to complete the installation. No leak found yet. Car started and ran fine. Drove it around the neighborhood and ran out of fuel. ![]() The spin-on filter is about 10% smaller than the one I had. Drove back to Pep Boys thinking it was not the right filter; they looked again, said the rubber ring seal matches my old filter (same size) and that's all that is important, and confirmed that this was the correct filter. The clear plastic one is quite cheap; the one I replaced had metal at both ends where it goes into the fuel line. The one from Baker Auto Parts is plastico, head to toe. Maybe I spoke too soon. Checked under the hood today and the spin on fuel filter is wet on the top - that is the cap which covers the filter and has a couple of bolts going through, one of which secures the spin on filter - is wet with fuel.
I tightened the bolt up a bit and will try it again. Is this common; did I maybe just not tighten it down enough? Thx. |

I didn't know that the Purolator filter was a reboxed Mann...the things you find out here.
My personal preference has always been NAPA Gold filters (rebranded Wix.) -Costs a couple of dollars, but hey.

Did not replace or see a crush washer or O ring. There was no replacement in the box. I am still experiencing a wet top on the filter top. Maybe need to take it apart and look for an O ring. Think Pep Boys would have the crush washer?

Roger; thanks guys. I never completely removed the bolt from the cap which covers the fuel filter so I never saw a washer. I assume the crush washer goes between the bolt head and the cap?? Must because the large rubber ring on the top of the fuel filter would seal of a leak underneath the cap.

I read back through this whole thing. the picture you posted if your filter head, looks like it has the #02. if so, you do not need a crush washer under the bolt head. You just need 2 "O" rings on the bolt shaft.
this is from post#7 Inspect the fuel bolt that holds that secondary filter on. You can tell what kind of washers you need by the part number on the filter head. What are the seventh and eight digits? If it's an "01", you'll need a single rubber "O" ring and a crush washer. If it's an "02" you'll need two different sized rubber "O" rings. I picked up an assortment of those rubber "O" rings from the local AutoZoo. If you need a crush washer, this may be a bit more difficult to locate. It's a 19mm (not 18mm) or 3/4 inch ID affair. I have used a #30 cap thread gasket. You still have not said if yours is a 01 or a 02. 1 for 1 crush washer, and 2 for 2 "O" rings. the 01 also has one "O" ring on the bolt shaft. Charlie

Forgot about that post. The number is 615 092 02 08 (same as the one in Post #7). Based upon your advice I guess it needs two different size O rings and no crush washer. Should I pull the bolt and take it to Ace Hardware to fit it for the O rings? Since they are constantly in contact with fuel, is the composition of the O rings important?
Getting there. Top of the cap is still a little wet today. Also the car seems to be surging in power between shifts. If I shower down on the throttle, it shifts pretty well but otherwise there is a brand new surging between first and second gears. Think this is a result of the small leak in the fuel filter? |

I purchased a box of different sized "O" rings at AutoZone, I think, that will have the sizes you need.
You may have a transmission issue, sounds like flaring. Reduce the amount of vacuum going to the trans, should help.

Yep, I know about flaring. This does not feel like that - this is absolutely a surge, release, surge, release and it happens between first and second. Does not feel like a flare. As I understand it, a flare feels like the clutches slipping instead of shifting crisply.
If it does not go away with the fixed fuel filter, I will CW the modulator a bit and see if it helps. It was shifting like butter before I ran out of fuel and changed the filters. That's why I am wondering if it is due to an irregular fuel flow. Also since it does not happen when I shower down on the accelerator. But still just a guess. |
